A typical late-afternoon thunderhead boils up over Darwin city, a towering cumulonimbus in an otherwise lightly clouded sky. Rain is pouring down over a fairly small area under the cloud, which is lit a pale peach in places by the approaching sunset. In the foreground on the left is the wide curve of the mangroves forming the shoreline of Nightcliff Bay, with the bay and some pioneering mangroves on the right. The storm itself is over the continuation of the curve of the bay, running off the frame to the right.

In the foreground is a large waterfall plunge-pool, bordered on both sides by sheer sandstone cliffs. The water is clear, green and inviting, and a half-dozen or so people are swimming in the pool. Outback Northern Territory, a typical scene with dried wet-season grass stubble and straggly eucalypts. A glossy ibis in a steep banking turn, low over marshy tropical wetland. The bird is flying right to left, wings fully spread and tilted towards us. Thanks to the angle of the shot, its legs are completely hidden, so its outline looks like some sort of experimental airframe, or perhaps a living pterodactyl of some kind.

A very long queue several people wide completely fills the long stair entry to the Kasprowy Wierch cable car station. There are at least a hundred people queued, stretching down the street from the bottom of the stairs, and there are more further uphill out of shot.

A flock of nine or ten (it's hard to be sure) wild rainbow lorikeets is jammed into a small hanging outdoor feeder, some clinging upside down to the frame, all trying to get to the dish. Two more lorikeets are perched on the arm from which the feeder hangs, apparently turned towards each other in conversation. Behind is a blurred green background of tree foliage.

A dramatic pink sunrise fills most of the sky, with grey-pink cumulus floating in front of a diffuse bank of bright pink cloud, strongly backlit by the risen sun which is lighting an even brighter band of golden pink light. The view is framed to the left by the trunk, in silhouette, of a large eucalypt, whose long overhanging lower branch fills the top of the frame, also in silhouette. A scarlet honeyeater (Myzomela sanguinolenta) on a branch, singing. The honeyeater is only about 10cm long, the smallest honeyeater in Australia. It has a scarlet head and throat, and grey body.

A restless flycatcher launching itself off its perch on the side of a large eucalypt trunk. Its wings are spread wide, and thanks to the sun above and behind it, a shadow bird in a similar pose is cast onto the tree trunk in front of it. Shadow dancing.

A section of the trunk and some branches of a large eucalypt dominate this picture. On a higher branch two kookaburras are perched, seemingly in conversation. On a lower branch a lone male king parrot is sitting. The stocky, brown and grey kookaburras are in sharp contrast to the long elegant and very brightly red and green coloured parrot. Spread out behind the tree is a vista of the crowns of several lower trees, and then treed plains stretching out to the coast, and then the blue sea of the sunshine coast.
