Hey Fedi, been a while!

Excited to announce the first release (v0.5.0-rc.5) of Continuwuity:

Continuwuity is a community-led fork of the Matrix homeserver conduwuit, picking up development after the original was archived (see: girlboss.ceo/~strawberry/condu).

Good news for existing users: Continuwuity is a drop-in replacement! Just swap the binary/Docker image.
Conduwuit still runs but isn't updated; Continuwuity is the path forward.

We're a group of former conduwuit admins & contributors aiming for stability & new features. Check our roadmap/issues: forgejo.ellis.link/continuwuat

Hihi, not that Matrix though... This is a chat app service thingie. I don't know much about the tech behind it, but for those curious about it, here is a link: https://matrix.org/. There are different clients available, so you're free to choose, should you want to try it out. https://matrix.org/ecosystem/clients/ I was advised to use Element, and it's been pretty straight forward to use for me. Back in December, I started a Matrix chat group called "Our Journey". My idea was, to have a protected group environment, with more privacy than sharing on (open) social media. A place to connect with like-minded folks. To share our journey through life. It's ups and downs. To share silly things, to support one another, to have people to chat with when you'd feel a need for that... We do our best to keep politics and religion out of the chat, as the world can be rough enough without also dealing with those things as well. […]

Finally have my Prosody server all compliant!

I had an epiphany last night about something in the nginx config and after sorting that, all the optional XEP listed also pass!

Now to convince wife and kids to use it for our group chat... they really don't want to install any more apps, because I'm "being difficult" because they already use whatsapp 😑

The main reason I'm impressed with it over matrix, is reliable notifications. It just works. So far, anyway.

Thank you to the people that replied to my post last week suggesting I try xmpp after the matrix server we used shut down. I had written it off as an old platform for nerds, but it's... actually really good ❤️

Cool. I just tested #ElementX with a fresh #matrix.org account, and what shall I say: Not a single thing works flawlessly. Not even starting a simple 1:1 chat with another user works without major quirks (initial message is missing and never shows up; Element X doesn't find the DM room and starts a second room when trying to verify the other user).

Good that @element is sunsetting the classic #ElementAndroid 🙄.

@eloy This is one reason I do not use #Signal, it is essentially a (presumably benevolent) dictatorship, where a single party controls the network and wards off 3rd party clients and even modified versions of the signal client. The client code is open-source, but the network effectively limits your FOSS freedoms anyway.

I prefer to use #Matrix, which has many clients, supports #federation and is nice to use. Of course it has issues, but those are (IMHO) implementation issues, not fundamental...

ok actually tho now that we're seeing more movements like the fediverse for decentralized internet stuff can we please start a movement to tell people about the matrix protocol. can we spread the news that there is a chat protocol like discord but its decentralized and can be self-hosted and works similarly to email in that you set up an address with a host and log into that host via a client. and u can talk to anyone from any matrix host on any matrix client. in the same way that you can send emails to any email address from any email host. except its instant messaging and video and voice calls and everything. and its also end-to-end encrypted. can we do that now please. i've been trying to get people on matrix for ages

Did you ever hear about MatrixRooms.info ? It's a demo instance of MRS (Matrix Rooms Search) - a search engine of #matrix #rooms across #federation we're developing for a while.

The website got numerous updates, including a community spotlight for small-yet-promising rooms, search relevancy options, and even (finally!) a 1-click form to add your own #matrix server!

Aktueller Anmelde-Prozess

zwei dinge sind momentan zu beachten und haben auswirkungen wenn ihr einen account auf unserem matrix server haben wollt.

zu einen gibt es gerade eine transition hin zum “matrix authentication process” eine moderne einlog-variante, die wir noch nicht bei uns anschalten werden, da wir sonst unsere matrix-bruecken in gefahr bringen. daher kann man gerade nicht in der neuen “element x” einen neuen account anlegen. dafuer braucht es momentan unbedingt einen desktop mit desktop-element oder ihr geht per desktop-browser auf https://element.freiburg.social und legt euch da einen account an, mit dem ihr euch im zweiten schritt in der app einloggen koennt.

als zweites haben wir gerade eine groessere spam-welle im matrix netzwerk. daher haben wir eine kleine huerde eingeschaltet, damit nicht automatisiert neue accounts bei uns angelegt werden koennen. daher braucht ihr nun beim account anlegen zusaetzlich einen “registrierungs-token”. den koennt ihr ganz leicht erhalten, in dem ihr eine email an token@matrix.freiburg.social sendet. wir antworten dann mit einem token, der einmalig verwendbar und 7 tage gueltig ist.

Did you know that the default video file size limit on #Mastodon is 99 MB per post?

For comparison, #BlueSky has a 50 MB limit per post up to 60 seconds long and #Gab has a 50 MB limit PER DAY (unless you give Andrew Torba money).

This larger limit allows me to post this brilliant scene from The Matrix Reloaded in its entirety :matrix_code:

Today's design brainworm: Matrix, but usable like Discord, and e2e encryption by default. Biggest usability win would be not losing all the messages when the server gets upgraded. 😛

Not even writing this one down, I don't have time.

Update: not sure what Matrix server I was that bit about losing messages, but apparently it’s wrong! 👍
