Finally did it...
I've been poking at #Handbrake to compress content on the #MediaServer I keep running various tests on the HD content and so far It feels like it will be ok.
Part of it is to increase storage availability, but part of it has been while shuffling files around. Blu ray rips of even TV shows are chunky.
I'm a little frustrated with getting the presets working for things like Audio tracks. I want it to pass thru all of the tracks of a given language, and I keep getting re-encoding tracks mixed in that I have to delete to get the final file to do what I want. I keep poking at it, but I just can't seem to get it to behave the way I want without manually touching every encode job. If anybody has any thoughts, I'd appreciate it. The documentation isn't making sense to me.
On the flip side, my Nvidia card on my laptop is supported for hardware encoding, so I've increased frame processing by a factor of 10.
We have bought a PLEX Pass
I was always going to do it at some point, but their more than doubling of the price and the changes to remote play kind of forced our hand
I'm curious to hear what others are #SelfHosting! Here's my current setup:
Hardware & OS
Infrastructure & Networking
Security & Monitoring
Authentication & Identity Management
Productivity & Personal Tools
Notifications & Development Workflow
Accessibility Focus ️
Accessibility heavily influences my choices—I use a screen reader full-time (#ScreenReader), so I prioritize services usable without sight (#InclusiveDesign, #DigitalAccessibility). Always open to discussing accessibility experiences or recommendations!
I've also experimented with:
I don't really have a media collection, so no Plex or Jellyfin here (#MediaServer)—but I'm always open to suggestions! I've gotten a bit addicted to exploring new self-hosted services!
What's your setup like? Any cool services you'd recommend I try?

There ends the journey, to be continued…
Fixing the subtitles is next weekend’s task as well as adding some more films.
I’m enjoying learning as I go and am secretly enjoying all these little problems that arise. This is a fun project and I love having my own curated media library!
But Plex did NOT like my HDD! So I did a bit of research and figured out how to mount it differently.
Then success! Sort of. Some of my films loaded on Plex, but others did not. This turned out to be a permissions issue with the missing film folders, which I couldn’t fix on the Pi, but did so easily on Mac.
Success! Again sort of. Now all of my films are loading through, but Plex is not pulling through subtitles. Kind of an issue for films such as Troll Hunter…
My journey setting up my Raspberry Pi as a media server
While it seems possible, I couldn’t figure out how to use my ipad as a display for the Pi, so I hooked it up to my tv
The Pi didn’t like my bluetooth mouse (so I borrowed a wired one)
It didn’t like my (borrowed) bluetooth keyboard (so I borrowed a wired one)
The Pi liked my external HDD! Somewhat surprisingly, as it's formatted for Mac…
Thanks to my good friend Claude, I finally got this working a mere 10 months after the system was built! #nixos
#mediaserver
#Jellyfin is the best software I've discovered in the last few years. I'm loving this. Making my own collections of all the media I love. Streaming it effortlessly everywhere I go. Automatically identifying it. Sharing it with others. Downloading it with the click of a button.
This is how media consumption should be. I think it might be time for me to make a donation because they deserve it!
Wow, super impressed with @jellyfin over #plex. Just installed it last weekend and have been using it, trying it side by side with plex and jellyfin not only looks better, it sounds a lot better too. Same films, same files, and even my wife who doesn't give a crap about this kind of thing thought it was a lot better lol. #mediaserver Now need to go figure out all the add-ons you can use with #jellyfin to see if i can improve the functionality and features.
Currently have my Jellyfin server locally but I'm interested in tossing it on an EC2 server so my family can access it; any one smarter than I know of any risks or downsides to doing that? #jellyfin #mediaserver
Warto?

With the debacle of West Wing getting pulled and then reinstated on Max (yeah, I know. first world, head in sand, need cope problems), I realized that I hadn't finished ripping the DVDs to put on the media server. I picked them up used some time ago. I truly loathe trying to track down favorite shows across various streaming services, so I really try to obtain physical media. I can then rip it and upload it to my jellyfin server and have it streamable for me anytime I want without fear of it disappearing or relocating. I highly recommend it. You never know when a favorite way of obtaining brain chemicals is going to fall out from underneath you right at the moment you need it most.
Tired of #Plex mangling my audio files metadata so I’m trying #Roon. Problem is I like to stream from my collection to wherever I am out of the house. Set up and port forwarding successful but eventually #RoomARC will tell me the signal is not strong enough and stops streaming. #Plexamp will be working just fine. This is regardless of signal strength. Any ideas? Alternatives? #Streaming #MediaServer

The next phase of sorting out the media collection is the most daunting task of all, music!
I have a cloud backup with Apple, but I am warry of having only one place its available, so putting it onto the PLEX server slowly, now concentrating on some of the stuff I tend to listen to a bit more, rather than the haphazard way I have been doing it until recently
Just discovered my TV can access my PC as a media server without using a third party app
So I gave up trying to make Raspberry Pi 5 work adequately as a desktop, and started using it as a server. I installed #Jellyfin, streaming to our network our 27k+ songs, and then casting it to our hi-fi system via the phone app. All songs were legally acquired between 2008 & 2013 (plus our ripped CDs from the past). Back then, #indie musicians would release freeware mp3s of their singles, and I bought a lot from #iTunes too.
