Gary<p>Design for Living (1933)</p><p>A film about the relationship between three impoverished artists who set up house in Paris - via a gentleman's agreement it's all meant to be very platonic - which of course is the comedy. The original 1932 play had been written by Noel Coward to be performed by him and his two close friends Lynn Fontanne and Alfred Lunt. It's a lot of fun and still holds up quite well. You forgot how interesting relational experiments were in the 1930's, and what a stifling effect the Hays Code had on U.S. culture (and us, through it's export and dominance). </p><p><a href="https://aus.social/tags/film" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>film</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/comedy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>comedy</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/DesignForLiving" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>DesignForLiving</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/ErnstLubitsch" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ErnstLubitsch</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/FredricMarch" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FredricMarch</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/GaryCooper" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GaryCooper</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/MiriamHopkins" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MiriamHopkins</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/polyamory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>polyamory</span></a> <a href="https://aus.social/tags/preCode" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>preCode</span></a></p>
P.M.Bryant<p>We watched the Miriam Hopkins starrer “Men Are Not Gods” (1936). It was entertaining, but the most notable aspect of it was Broadway legend Gertrude Lawrence in a top supporting role. I didn’t know she had made any film appearances. Here she is with Sebastian Shaw, both in costume for “Othello”, the play-within-the-movie that the plot of this picture centers on. </p><p><a href="https://masto.ai/tags/ClassicHollywood" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ClassicHollywood</span></a> <a href="https://masto.ai/tags/GertrudeLawrence" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GertrudeLawrence</span></a> <a href="https://masto.ai/tags/MiriamHopkins" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MiriamHopkins</span></a></p>
