But now, retired, I drive maybe 5000 kms/a, and the per km rate has gone sky high. Just today, I'm having a timing belt and water pump replaced ($2300), not because they broke but because they've passed 160K kms, the normal lifespan. This is to "save" $10K+ for a new motor—my brother's expense when his, same model and motor, blew up on him.</p><p>My bike, though at life's end, has 30K kms on it, over 20 years of absolute reliability through all seasons, and still has not cost me $600. My new bike will not cost more than $750, and that will include a <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/nexus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nexus</span></a> 8 internal hub, like my last one.</p><p>There's no comparison here, especially when you assign a dollar value to the joy of your commute, bike vs car. <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/Car" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Car</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/commuters" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>commuters</span></a> live impoverished lives; I know cause I was one of them!</p><p>(And P.S. I say all this as a former long distance truck driver; I actually love driving, but not in the city, where the lowly <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/bike" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>bike</span></a> is king!)<br> <br><a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/yegbike" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>yegbike</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.ca/tags/sustainability" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sustainability</span></a></p>
