Nick Daniels :verified:
I am an avid collector of PC portables, with a particular fondness for BSI machines. And I recently purchased a holy grail I didn't even know existed.

A FREAKING PC CASE WHITE ONE!!!

Not just the color, but the finish is very close to regular PC case matte and not the usual NGagesque soft touch plastic I've come to expect from these things.

It doesn't look like it was used as industrial or test equipment; it has no random instrument interface cards, it has all its bay doors, all its doors period, and all the slot covers. Besides it being kept in a case (BSIs kept in cases for years are way more brittle than those that weren't) and it being cracked at the screen hinge (presumably when someone tried to tilt it forward after finding it), and a few missing key caps: its mint.

The keyboards are made by Cherry, a slightly undersized 104 key with a trackpad. They still sell the USB version, with or without the trackpad. So, I could get new white caps, but I think I'm going to give it all dark grey keys (the same color as the white one's modifier keys) from my parts machines keyboard.

It just arrived yesterday, and I haven't had a chance to open it yet, but the best part: it doesn't use a baby-AT motherboard! It has a ISA/PCI backplane (still baby-AT style in terms of power connections) and an Axiom SBC card. Its screen is sadly still LVDS. However, there is some kind of LVDS adapter board pictured in the listing I've never seen before, and the SBCs diagrams show an 18bit LVDS port on the SBC already; so, I'm real curious what that's for.

So today I'll be opening it up and figuring out which of all possible ways I'm going to connect an upgraded video card (the Chips and Techs ones in these things aren't even good enough for DOS games) to the screen I'm going to use. I think I have a spare compatible driver board kicking around. Getting a VGA cable from the back to the inside via the cable channel is a real pain without tearing the whole thing down to the case though. Given there is a chance, small as it may be, this is the only one of these, I'm not risking that. I've never seen even a mention of any color besides black in the docs for these things.

Should be fun 😁
#PC #PCPortable #BSI #retrocomputing #project
