The NC Renaissance Festival has no shortage of cool looking buildings and shops, full of handmade merch! One thing to note is that this particular Ren faire is seasonal and is only open usually around late Sept until mid November. Tickets sell out fast!

Fountain / NY Ren Faire / Tuxedo Park, NY

For me, photography is often about being in the right place at the right time. There was a mister at the ren faire and I stepped towards it to take a picture of a few people...but they walked away just as I walked up. Disappointed, I looked over to the other side and saw bird lady. We locked eyes and she started posing for me.

I never bothered to learn the origins of the Renaissance Faire/Festival phenomenon in the US. I had assumed it had analogs to some sort of festivals in Europe. Nope it's a 100% American creation. It always felt more Medieval than Renaissance era too, which it always was apparently. It was just the people sponsoring the first one in 1963 thought Medieval had negative connotation to so many people so they opted for the more enlightened era name Renaissance.
