Annika Rockenberger (she/they)<p>Last toot before summer in my capacity as researcher &amp; with <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO</span></a></p><p>For the first time in my grown-up life, I will not bring work to vacation. I've shut down the office &amp; will be completely offline, work-wise—no emails, no reading, no writing, no catching up on things. <br>It can either wait until I am back, or it simply will not happen. The world will move on anyway.</p><p>Might toot about <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/ExLibris" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ExLibris</span></a>.</p><p>Warning: <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Illness" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Illness</span></a> <br>Very personal post on my website: <a href="https://www.annikarockenberger.com/2025-07-03/the-circle-closes-summer-recap/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">annikarockenberger.com/2025-07</span><span class="invisible">-03/the-circle-closes-summer-recap/</span></a></p>
Annika Rockenberger (she/they)<p>[Re-tooting bc. I messed up:]🧵 1/ Speaking of which, today is <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Wednesday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wednesday</span></a>, which means <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO</span></a> at the Dept. of Archaeology, Conservation &amp; History!<br>I have scheduled a longer guidance session w/ a researcher of Arabic literature and Islamic Culture who has photographed 100s of <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Arabic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Arabic</span></a> manuscripts from <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Sudan" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Sudan</span></a> a long time ago &amp; wants to make them accessible both to the communities in Sudan &amp; researchers elsewhere. The photographs need to be digitized and made machine-readable.</p>
Annika Rockenberger (she/they)<p>🧵 1/ It's <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO</span></a> <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Wednesday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wednesday</span></a>! I started it by talking to a colleague of many years about practical data management (hint: older software for organising &amp; classifying digitized archival materials). We also talked about ways of automatically recognizing <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Arabic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Arabic</span></a> texts - a hot topic here in Oslo!<br>They will create a small working group doing manual transcriptions to train models for their materials together. The newly established <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/SustainableDSEs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SustainableDSEs</span></a> network will support them!</p>
Annika Rockenberger (she/they)<p>Today's <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO</span></a> is mainly scheduling guidance sessions for the following weeks!<br>That's quite alright; I got to have lunch w/ my colleagues &amp; answered questions regarding <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@zotero" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>zotero</span></a></span> &amp; how to get <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/OCR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OCR</span></a>'ed reference lists into <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Zotero" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Zotero</span></a> using <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/AnystyleIO" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AnystyleIO</span></a> <a href="https://anystyle.io/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">anystyle.io/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a>.<br>We talked about the new <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/SustainableDSEs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SustainableDSEs</span></a> network. <br>I finalised and distributed a job offer for a research assistant to help me finish the bilingual <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/DigitalScholarlyEdition" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DigitalScholarlyEdition</span></a> of the <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/EthicaComplementoria" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>EthicaComplementoria</span></a>.</p>
Annika Rockenberger (she/they)<p>Hello, and welcome back to <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO</span></a> <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Wednesday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wednesday</span></a>! <br>It's my first day back at the Dept. of Archaeology, Conservation, and History, where I support and give guidance in digital research activities.<br>Researchers, incl. master students, can drop in to my open office between 10:00 and 16:00 or book a session.<br>I'll keep posting about my work here - stay tuned!</p>
Annika Rockenberger (she/they)<p>Good morning! Today from Lund, Sweden, where I will talk about my work with <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO</span></a> between the University of Oslo Library &amp; the Dept. of Archeology, Conservation and History.<br>I will give a talk at the research seminar series for mediated culture and information: <a href="https://www.kultur.lu.se/en/research/seminar-series/research-seminar-for-mediated-culture-and-information/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">kultur.lu.se/en/research/semin</span><span class="invisible">ar-series/research-seminar-for-mediated-culture-and-information/</span></a><br>I will also talk about <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/EmotionalLabour" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>EmotionalLabour</span></a> <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/CompetitionForResources" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CompetitionForResources</span></a>, Norwegian academic peculiarities and how (or not) the library deals with these.<br>Will write it up in a blog post later!</p>
Annika Rockenberger (she/they)<p><a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO</span></a> continues w/ a pleasant guidance session for an extensive grant application from the field of legal history. <br>Is building a custom database for various materials the way to go? I strongly recommend investigating who can &amp; under which conditions maintain your tech stack, back and frontend. In many cases, using off-the-shelf tools during a project is a suitable solution. Afterwards, archive all or most of your research data in a maintained &amp; curated repository.</p>
Annika Rockenberger (she/they)<p>🧵 6/ While wrapping up, I got an email asking for advice to give to a student who wants to use ChatGPT and related AI tools for their thesis. Thankfully, <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/UniversityOfOslo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>UniversityOfOslo</span></a> has a clear policy and many helpful resources in both Norwegian and English on their website: <a href="https://www.uio.no/english/services/ai/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="">uio.no/english/services/ai/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a> and I am more than happy to direct them to the right person to talk to once they know more concretely what they want to use and how they want to use it!<br>This <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO</span></a> <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Wednesday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wednesday</span></a> was busy!</p>
Annika Rockenberger (she/they)<p>🧵 4/ And finally ending the <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO</span></a> <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Wednesday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wednesday</span></a> with a guidance session on how to integrate a digital component into a joint BA/MA course for the spring semester. After a couple of suggestions based on the content and the learning outcomes of the course, we ended up w/ trying <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Recogito" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Recogito</span></a>, a platform for <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Annotation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Annotation</span></a> of all kinds of historical and other sources. Students will be working w/ <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/MedievalHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MedievalHistory</span></a> from the <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/VikingAge" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VikingAge</span></a> and the <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/100YearsWar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>100YearsWar</span></a>. Exciting!</p>
Annika Rockenberger (she/they)<p>🧵 1/ It's <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO</span></a> <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Wednesday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wednesday</span></a> again, and I had a consultation about data management &amp; digital tools for a grant application. It's worthwhile to remember that not all historians work w/ events from a long time ago, so questions about personal data, especially sensitive personal data, will come up eventually. Be aware of the rules, policies and, not least, laws you must follow when conducting interviews, transcribing them using software &amp; cloud services, sharing them, etc.</p>
Annika Rockenberger (she/they)<p>🧵 2/ <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO</span></a> While available for drop-in guidance, I try to catch up with the <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Danish" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Danish</span></a> <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/EthicaComplementoria" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>EthicaComplementoria</span></a> sub-project. My research assistant has moved on after doing a first round of proofreading all 328 pages and tagging layout and text features. I'm playing around with the <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://hcommons.social/@TEIConsortium" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>TEIConsortium</span></a></span> <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/TEI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TEI</span></a> export from <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Transkribus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Transkribus</span></a>, which is the next step in the project: Creating a clean, valid marked-up text to become the basis for the <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/DigitalScholarlyEdition" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DigitalScholarlyEdition</span></a> and further work.</p>
Annika Rockenberger (she/they)<p>🧵 1/ It's <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO</span></a> <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Wednesday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wednesday</span></a> again - and so far, I've had a quiet morning. I started w/ listening to a presentation about the recent conservation and archiving project of photographic glass plates from the <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/SunObservatory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SunObservatory</span></a> in <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Harestua" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Harestua</span></a>. Awesome work &amp; the next step will be digitizing all plates and related materials. The project is conducted by Pablo Castilla, photographer and conservator and funded by the Museum for University History <a href="https://www.muv.uio.no/english/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="">muv.uio.no/english/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p>
Annika Rockenberger (she/they)<p>🧵 1/ The initiated already know what happens today, but do YOU? It's <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO</span></a> <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Wednesday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wednesday</span></a>! I started my day w/ a visit to the archaeologists, who are housed in a different part of the campus than the historians. I guided a researcher through setting up and exploring <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Gephi" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Gephi</span></a> for <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/NetworkAnalysis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NetworkAnalysis</span></a> of <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/AncientGreek" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AncientGreek</span></a> tombs (or the stuff therein). It will be part of a newly developed seminar for archaeology students. We talked <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/ContextOfDiscovery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ContextOfDiscovery</span></a> <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/DataModeling" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DataModeling</span></a> &amp; basics of <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/HNA" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HNA</span></a></p>
Annika Rockenberger (she/they)<p>🧵 1/ Good morning! It's <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO</span></a> <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Wednesday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wednesday</span></a> again; I start the day guiding a master's student in history on how to use <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Transkribus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Transkribus</span></a> for recognizing C17th <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Danish" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Danish</span></a> <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Norwegian" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Norwegian</span></a> prints. A good start for this material would be the public model <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/NorFraktur" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NorFraktur</span></a> provided by the National Library of Norway. It performs reasonably well and should make keyword searches in the material much easier! Try it out yourself: <a href="https://readcoop.eu/model/danish-norwegian-and-german-print-17th-century-2/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">readcoop.eu/model/danish-norwe</span><span class="invisible">gian-and-german-print-17th-century-2/</span></a>!</p>
Annika Rockenberger (she/they)<p>🧵 3/ <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO</span></a> continues after lunch w/ my "adopted" colleagues from the <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/History" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>History</span></a> section. I had a coordinating &amp; getting-to-know meeting to set up some presentations and show-and-tell sessions for the Depts. <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/DigitalMeetup" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DigitalMeetup</span></a> that happens every <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Tuesday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Tuesday</span></a>. I offered to do short sessions on <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/TaDiRAH" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TaDiRAH</span></a>, <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Transkribus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Transkribus</span></a>, <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Tropy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Tropy</span></a> and <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Tesseract" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Tesseract</span></a> during the fall. I'll use the 1678 <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Danish" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Danish</span></a> translation of the <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/EthicaComplementoria" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>EthicaComplementoria</span></a> as an example for <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/AutomatedTextRecognition" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AutomatedTextRecognition</span></a> of C17th books!</p>
Annika Rockenberger (she/they)<p>🧵 2/ <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO</span></a> I often get asked about how to quickly search through (handwritten) archival documents. Depending on how many documents we are talking about, there certainly are quicker ways then reading them! But setting up a workflow for <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Digitisation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Digitisation</span></a>, <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/AutomaticTextRecognition" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AutomaticTextRecognition</span></a> <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/QualityAssurance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>QualityAssurance</span></a> aren't done quickly either! Accessible tools like <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Transkribus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Transkribus</span></a> can help a lot here, but they can't do magic. So: plan enough time for these tasks and don't expect 100% accuracy!</p>
Annika Rockenberger (she/they)<p>🧵 1/ It's <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Wednesday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Wednesday</span></a>, which means <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO</span></a> at the Dept. of Archaeology, Conservation and History again! Today I will be in the History section, catching up on some questions I received via email and drafting a presentation of <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/TaDiRAH" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TaDiRAH</span></a> for an upcoming <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/DigitalMeetup" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DigitalMeetup</span></a>.</p>
Annika Rockenberger (she/they)<p>🧵 6/ <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO</span></a> Picking up from a previous post, I recommend everyone who publishes web content as their research output has it actively web archived. You can either do this by yourself using the <span class="h-card"><a href="https://mastodon.archive.org/@internetarchive" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>internetarchive</span></a></span> <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/WaybackMachine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WaybackMachine</span></a>. If you are in Norway and your website is either on a .no domain or has Norwegian or Norway-related content, you can contact the <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/NorwegianWebArchive" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NorwegianWebArchive</span></a> <a href="https://www.nb.no/samlingen/nettarkivet/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="">nb.no/samlingen/nettarkivet/</span><span class="invisible"></span></a> at the Norwegian National Library and have them archive your website.</p>
Annika Rockenberger (she/they)<p>🧵 5/ <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO</span></a> I continue my day at the section for <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Archeology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Archeology</span></a> and <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Conservation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Conservation</span></a>. I will make myself available in the break room, while hunting for coffee ;)</p>
Annika Rockenberger (she/they)<p>🧵 4/ Many researchers are not trained in data modelling and database building; however, data modelling is integral to working with any data, in my opinion. As is making a <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/DataManagementPlan" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DataManagementPlan</span></a> and keeping a <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/Log" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Log</span></a> to support documentation, memory, collaboration, and trouble shooting! <a href="https://fedihum.org/tags/ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO</span></a></p>
