Anti-Trump resistance sees another leader in Van Hollen as Democrats’ leadership carousel turns

"Ezra Levin, co-founder of the #resistance group #Indivisible, said the growing protest movement is directed both at #Trump and 'the Schumers of the world, those who want us to roll over and play dead.' "

By STEVE PEOPLES, April 20, 2025

"Now, it’s Chris Van Hollen’s turn.

"The mild-mannered Maryland senator has suddenly emerged as a leading figure in the resistance to Donald Trump’s norm-busting presidency, becoming the latest in a small but growing collection of Democratic officials testing the strength of their political power in a weakened party with no clear leader.

"Van Hollen’s rise follows his decision to travel 2,000 miles to El Salvador last week to meet with #KilmarAbregoGarcia, who was wrongly deported and federal courts have said should be returned.

"Van Hollen did not secure the release of the Salvadoran citizen who had been living in Maryland. But simply by meeting with him, in defiance of Trump and his ally El Salvador President Nayib Bukele, Van Hollen created a new sense of hope and momentum for Abrego Garcia’s family and the anti-Trump resistance.

" 'Sen. Van Hollen’s leadership in this moment is exactly how Democrats should be pushing back against a wannabe dictator like Donald Trump — calling for law and order over chaos and adhering to the Constitution instead of a tyrant,' Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin told The Associated Press."

#Activists joined forces on a wide variety of issues on Saturday

by Naomi LaChance, April 19, 2025

Excerpt: "Protesters gathered near the White House to demand that #KilmarAbregoGarcia be brought back to the U.S. The Maryland man was illegally deported to El Salvador and remains there despite a Supreme Court order to bring him back.

"A search for affiliated events yields more than 750 results. #50501Michigan is planning a “#MarchForMotherNature” where attendees hold #CleanUps in local areas. In #LafayetteLouisiana, organizers are holding a '#GoodTrouble March.' In #TampaFlorida, activists gathered to protest the deportation of two #Venezuelan #immigrants to a #MegaPrison in #ElSalvador.

"In #NewYorkCity, people organized in front of the New York Public Library. Someone had drawn 'WE THE PEOPLE' in chalk in the street.

"Other areas are holding #NoKings protests to mark the 250th anniversary of the #AmericanRevolution. In #Concord,Massachusetts, Conan Walter held a sign that said, 'Stop #fascism now.' "

#SupremeCourt temporarily blocks #deportations of #Venezuelans held in northern #Texas

By Nicholas Riccardi, April 19, 2025

"The Supreme Court on Saturday blocked, for now, the deportations of any Venezuelans held in northern Texas under an 18th-century wartime law.

"In a brief order, the court directed the Trump administration not to remove Venezuelans held in the #BluebonnetDetentionCenter 'until further order of this court.'

"Justices #ClarenceThomas and #SamuelAlito dissented.

"The high court acted in an emergency appeal from the American Civil Liberties Union contending that immigration authorities appeared to be moving to restart removals under the #AlienEnemiesAct of 1798. The Supreme Court had said earlier in April that deportations could proceed only if those about to be removed had a chance to argue their case in court and were given 'a reasonable time' to contest their pending removals.

" 'We are deeply relieved that the Court has temporarily blocked the removals. These individuals were in imminent danger of spending the rest of their lives in a brutal Salvadoran prison without ever having had any due process,' ACLU lawyer Lee Gelernt said in an email."

#MonmothME #resists! #Monmouth #police department withdraws #ICE training application

Residents packed the Monmouth Board of Selectmen meeting Wednesday to speak out against the town's police department taking on the role of enforcing federal #immigration laws.

by Emily Duggan, Kennebec Journal, April 17, 2025

MONMOUTH — "After dozens of residents voiced opposition, the police department has withdrawn its application for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement program that allows local law enforcement agencies to work with the federal agency to enforce federal immigration laws.

"Police Chief Paul Ferland said he was seeking the training so his officers would know what to do if they come across people who are in the United States illegally.

"In the past year or so, Monmouth officers have called the U.S. Border Patrol about a dozen times, each time with questions about legal rights, when to detain someone and how to not violate someone’s constitutional rights.

"Each instance can take hours, Ferland said, as officers wait for federal agents to arrive from wherever they are stationed. Once the agents arrive, they check for the person’s immigration status and whether they may have an upcoming court date. If not, the officers can issue a date.

"The southwest Kennebec County town is home to a number of businesses, including #agricultural businesses that employ #migrant workers.

"Ferland announced the department’s withdrawal from the program Wednesday at the town’s Board of Selectmen meeting, which was packed with residents both in person and on Zoom who turned out mostly to speak against the move.

"Because Ferland is also the chief of the Winthrop Police Department, that town is also withdrawing, he said.
" 'When I saw how this is dividing the community, it’s not what I want. It’s not what our officers want. Our community is our community, it’s our home. The officers love their community, and we are not here to divide it. That is one of the reasons why I pulled the application. Not the only, but the biggest,' Ferland said.

"Following an executive order signed by President Donald #Trump, police departments from 38 states have applied to be a part of ICE’s 287 (g) program, including the #WellsPoliceDepartment, which according to Immigrations and Customs Enforcement data is the only #Maine police agency that is currently taking part."

#Immigrant coalition raises alarm over #WellsME #police #ICE partnership as state debate looms

April 13, 2025

WELLS, Maine (WGME) -- "The executive director of the #MaineImmigrantRightsCoalition, #MufaloChitam, says her organization is aware of the new agreement that the #WellsPoliceDepartment signed with ICE which allows officers to arrest people based on #immigration #violations.

"Wells is the first town in Maine to take this step, though other towns have applied as well.

"Chitam says, for her organization and the people they represent, the important thing is to bring awareness to what this means.

"Around the country, departments in 37 states have signed on.

" 'It just brings reality to Maine. We’ve been seeing this around the country, and around other states, but not experienced it in Maine. So that’s significant for us. It makes it real, it brings it home,' Chitam said.

"Maine lawmakers may also debate a bill that would ban police departments from this partnership."

[Full article - is behind a paywall] ‘We will not put up with #ICE’: #Students call for #SanctuaryStatus at #UMaine

By Sofia Langlois on April 14, 2025

A rally for sanctuary campus status at the University of Maine was hosted by Students for a Democratic Society (UMO-SDS) in partnership with #JewishVoiceForPeace (JVP) and Triota Epsilon Psi on April 12 in front of Fogler Library. Despite the rainy weekend, dozens of students showed up with handmade signs demanding protections for international students from deportation at an administrative level.

To create a sanctuary campus status at UMaine, the university would need to enact policies that limit Immigrations Customs Enforcement (ICE) access to campus and student information. It would also include a commitment to “non-cooperation” if asked to aid in a search for undocumented students.
SDS Member Gabriel Veilleux led the demonstration with chants before his speech. Some of these rally cries included “Say it once, say it twice: We will not put up with ICE,” “Money for housing and education, not for war and deportation” and “Black Bears, hear us shout: Sanctuary status now.”

Veilleux described current threats of deportation, arrests and detainment that have the potential to reach UMaine. He, like the other participants, believes that university administration must pass a resolution codifying sanctuary status measures to protect immigrants and international students. Veilleux stands firm that the “attack on one is an attack on all” mentality applies to this situation, insisting that UMaine would fail its entire community by remaining neutral.

“We stand here to send a message that the students of UMaine will never yield to the threats and pressure imposed upon us, that we will be steadfast in our #resistance to the #Trump Administration and that we will do all we can to defend our community from ICE invasions and kidnappings,” said Veilleux.
Triota Member Franny Wilson-Charuk addressed the crowd as a proxy for Cheyanne Goroshin, who was absent. Goroshin expressed that UMaine President Joan Ferrini-Mundy cannot uphold her priority to “promote student success” without protecting vulnerable populations on campus. She also emphasized that international students should not be expected to fight for their rights alone. Their ability to succeed may also impact that of their domestic peers and the functioning of UMaine as a whole.

“How do we ensure the success of students when their peers continue to be picked off the streets and detained? How do we ensure student success when admins can’t guarantee that students will be protected from ICE in all buildings on this campus, and when there is no protocol for protecting students who live off campus?,” said Wilson-Charuk.

Wilson-Charuk went on to list multiple ways in which UMaine can take meaningful action. The first is to increase transparency by publishing a list of every building that is restricted or unrestricted from ICE with an explanation as to why. Secondly, to initiate statements from UMPS that agree to prioritize student safety, even from federal agents. The final and primary action is to establish sanctuary status at UMaine.

SDS Member Morgan Ramsay described two situations where international students were targeted as a result of peaceful #activism.

On March 8, Columbia University Graduate Student #MahmoudKhalil was arrested at his apartment by ICE, despite being a permanent resident with a green card. Khalil helped lead protests against Israel. Awaiting trial, Khalil wrote a letter about the circumstances.

At Tufts University, Turkish Doctoral Student #RumeysaOzturk was detained by masked ICE officers dressed in plain clothes on her way to meet friends for dinner on March 25. Ozturk co-authored an op-ed article showing support for Palestinians in Gaza. She had an F1visa and no criminal allegations, but was accused of Hamas alignment according to Ramsay.

“So far, over 600 international students and recent grads across the US have had their visas revoked by the Trump Administration. Many of these visa cancellations are in response to participation in student-led activism…,” said Ramsay. “The Trump Administration is making our constitutional rights increasingly conditional, especially for those who do not hold citizenship status.”

JVP president Talia Cullum mentioned #HolocaustRemembranceDay, or #YomHaShoah next month in connection to the current political climate. Yom HaShoah means “Day of the Catastrophe” in Hebrew. According to Cullum, the phrase “#NeverAgain,” which most frequently refers to the Holocaust, can be applied to issues that are happening now.

“Never again is now. Never again is here. We don’t want a new #gestapo force coming and picking up our students on our campus,” said Cullum.

Cullum also read “First They Came,” a poem written in 1946 by Pastor Martin Niemöller that is meant to inspire mutual advocacy.

Participants holding signs, and a banner that reads “Immigrant students deserve to feel safe at school. Demand sanctuary status now.” Photo by Sofia Langlois
SDS Member Ryan Kennedy shared that one third of immigrants in America are pursuing higher education. He went on to express frustration for federal actions but also for university inaction. Kennedy specifically referenced the Office of Diversity and Inclusion changing its name to the Office for Community and Connections to remove #DEI per the executive order.

“This may be just a name change to some, but what it indicates is fear in the university. When the university is scared, they will turn their back on their students,” said Kennedy. “President Ferrini-Mundy has not made any statements about protections for students, and that is honestly shameful.”

Katelyn Spearrin concluded the speeches by reiterating the rally demands. She insisted that sanctuary status measures must be done prior to harassment from ICE to adequately prepare. Spearrin also thanks participants for their involvement in the cause.

“Everyone who showed up today in support of our international students and staff for the protection of our several vulnerable populations by keeping ICE away from our campus, gaining sanctuary status and advocating for justice, are on the right side of history today,” said Spearrin."

Private groups work to identify and report #StudentProtesters for possible #deportation

“Now they’re using tools of the state to actually go after people,” said a Columbia graduate student from South Asia who has been active in protests and spoke on condition of anonymity because of concerns about losing her visa. “We suddenly feel like we’re being forced to think about our survival.”

By ADAM GELLER, March 29, 2025

NEW YORK (AP) — "When a protester was caught on video in January at a New York rally against Israel, only her eyes were visible between a mask and headscarf. But days later, photos of her entire face, along with her name and employer, were circulated online.

"'Months of them hiding their faces went down the drain!' a fledgling technology company boasted in a social media post, claiming its #FacialRecognition tool had identified the woman despite the coverings.

"She was anything but a lone target. The same software was also used to review images taken during months of #ProPalestinian marches at U.S. colleges. A #RightWingJewish group said some people identified with the tool were on a list of names it submitted to President Donald #Trump’s administration, urging that they be deported in accordance with his call for the expulsion of foreign students who participated in 'pro-jihadist' protests.

"Other #ProIsrael groups have enlisted help from supporters on campuses, urging them to report foreign students who participated in protests against the war in #Gaza to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency."

#ICE Got Warrants Under “#FalsePretenses,” Claims #ColumbiaStudent Targeted Over #GazaProtests

The law behind the warrants bars concealment of people in the country illegally, yet the students were legal residents living on campus.

by Shawn Musgrave, March 28 2025

"Earlier this month, while hunting for #ColumbiaUniversity students to deport over their ties to #Gaza protests, the #Trump administration convinced a federal judge to sign off on search warrants for two students’ dorm rooms — then raided the residences with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

"As details about the warrants have emerged, however, so have allegations that federal agents misled the court and secured the warrants under 'false pretenses,' as one of the students whose room was searched, #YunseoChung, claimed in a lawsuit challenging her deportation.

"The warrants were predicated on probable cause that Columbia was 'harboring' students who were in the country illegally, court filings indicate. Chung, however, is a lawful permanent resident, notwithstanding the Trump administration’s efforts to deport her based on her arrest and citation at a Gaza sit-in. She has lived in the U.S. since she was 7 years old.

"'The basis for this entire operation is constitutionally invalid.'

"'The idea that they went before a federal magistrate judge and said, ‘We have to search Ms. Chung’s residence for evidence of Columbia harboring her’ — that shows they’re willing to lie to a judge,' said Nathan Yaffe, an immigration attorney.

"Yaffe represents both Chung and the other Columbia student who was targeted by the search warrants, #RanjaniSrinivasan, who left the country in mid-March.

"Most of the materials relating to the search warrants remain under seal in federal court, and Columbia declined to comment on them, citing student privacy protections. ICE did not respond to The Intercept’s questions about the warrants.

"'If the government falsified information to get the warrant, that is its own bundle of serious problems,' said Joshua Colangelo-Bryan, an attorney at #HumanRightsFirst who also represents Chung. 'But even if not, the basis for this entire operation is constitutionally invalid.'"

"Last week, the #MaineCoalitionForPalestine organized a protest of ICE detention of #ColumbiaUniversity student leader #MahmoudKhalil. Since then, ICE has operated as the #Trump Administration’s #SecretPolice, abducting a growing number of immigrant organizers for exercising their right to #FreeSpeech and protesting the U.S.-sponsored #genocide in #Gaza. The list includes #RumeysaOzturk, #YunseoChung, #BadarKhunSuri, #MomodouTaal, #RanjaniSrinivasan, as well as #farmworker organizer #AlfredoJuarezZerefino. Maine DSA member and Portland District 2 City Councilmember #WesPelletier spoke at the Portland Mahmoud Khalil protest and DSA chapters around New England issued a joint declaration reprinted below against the ICE abduction of Rumeysa Ozturk.

New England DSA chapters demand freedom for Rumeysa Ozturk

"Yesterday, ICE agents abducted Rumeysa Ozturk, a graduate student and pro-Palestine activist at Tufts.

"The kidnapping comes after almost 400 #ICEArrests in Massachusetts, as well as the #doxxing of Ozturk by the pro-Isreal website #CanaryMission.

"ICE’s abductions—of Ozturk, Khalil, and many others—is an unprecedented attack on basic #CivilRights in the name of U.S. Empire, whether those detained are peaceful #PoliticalActivists or undocumented #migrants seeking safety, jobs, and a better life.

"We must stand up against this brazen attack on #Palestine, #FreeSpeech, and the #RightToProtest.

"We must stand in solidarity with our neighbors and communities under attack from Trump, ICE, and all agents of #imperialism.

"Governor Healey, the courts, and the Democratic Party establishment are not coming to save us—we must mobilize, agitate, and organize in our workplaces and campuses to defend working-class rights.

#BostonMA protest calls for end of war in #Gaza, release of activist #MahmoudKhalil

Nationwide demonstrations were scheduled this weekend to protest the arrest of Mahmoud Khalil

By Thea DiGiammerino, March 16, 2025

"Hundreds calling for the end of the war in Gaza rallied in the streets of Boston Sunday, one of many demonstrations across the country protesting not only the violence but also recent action by the Trump administration toward a man who was arrested by immigration officials after speaking out about the issue.

"Chanting '#FreePalestine,' and other mottos calling for the end of the war, the crowd gathered in Copley Square then marched to the Mass. Ave Bridge, where they blocked traffic for around 10 minutes before moving off the streets.

"Massachusetts State Police said they monitored the event and no arrests were made."

[...]

"'When the Trump administration detained multiple people from the #PalestineMovement we could have seen our communities react in fear, we could have seen hundreds of Bostonians staying home today. And that’s not what we’re seeing because we know people will stand up against this #bullying,' one attendee told NBC10 Boston.

"Tensions over the situation in the Middle East and the #Trump administration's policies concerning the war remain high. Last week, the #DepartmentOfEducation issued a warning to 60 colleges and universities that they were under investigation for allegations of antisemitism. The Department of Justice also announced the creation of a federal task force to investigate the issue, and said Boston would be one of the cities targeted in the work."

#MahmoudKhalil Isn’t the Only #GreenCard Holder Targeted for Arrest

The Trump administration has identified another legal permanent resident it wants deported.

By Nick Miroff, March 13, 2025

Excerpt: "It turns out Secretary of State #MarcoRubio identified a second individual to be deported, and included that person alongside Khalil in a March 7 letter to the Department of Homeland Security [#DHS]. Both were identified in the letter as legal permanent residents, The Atlantic has learned.

"Rubio’s letter notified DHS that he had revoked both targets’ visas, setting in motion plans for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to arrest and attempt to deport them, according to a senior DHS official and another U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe how the operation against Khalil took shape.

In addition to the two names in Rubio’s initial letter, the State Department has also sent the names of 'one or two' more students whose visas it has revoked, according to the DHS official, who described the first group of names as an opening move, with 'more to come.'"

#MaineACLU Denounces ‘Cruel’ Use of #NewHampshire #FederalPrison to Hold #ICEDetainees

By Edward TomicMarch 11, 2025

"The #Maine American Civil Liberties Union (#ACLU) has issued a statement denouncing the use of a New Hampshire federal prison by U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain suspected illegal aliens.

"Last month, media outlets began reporting on a leaked memo, signed Feb. 6, that indicated ICE was intending to use #FCIBerlin, a medium-security prison in Berlin, N.H., to hold immigration detainees in custody.

"That memo noted that the units at FCI were not currently available due to there being a 'substantial amount of preparation and resources' needed before the prison could accept detainees, such as additional funding for staffing, food, utilities, clothing and other items.

"The memo also indicates that the federal Bureau of Prisons or warden at each locally designated prison may approve or reject a request by ICE to hold an ICE detainee for any reason, such as for lack of space, or medical, mental health, safety or security reasons.

"ICE lodges immigration detainers against unlawfully present noncitizens who have been arrested on criminal charges or who the agency has probable cause to believe are deportable from the U.S.

"'The government should not be using federal prisons to support the president’s #MassDeportation efforts,' said Carol Garvan, legal director of the ACLU of Maine, in a Monday statement.

"'The federal government itself acknowledged that FCI Berlin would require a ‘substantial amount of preparation,’ yet just weeks later they have already begun detaining people there,' Garvan said. 'We have strong concerns about the #inhumane treatment of people in ICE custody, and we will not stand by while our region is used to carry out these cruel policies.'"

'The confinement is unbearable': #Migrants describe being held at #Guantanamo

Two of the 170 migrants recently held there describe the conditions on the base.

By Laura Romero, February 28, 2025

"When Jose, a Venezuelan migrant who was seeking #asylum in the United States, was awoken by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement official at 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 8, he sensed he was being sent to #GuantanamoBay, home of the notorious U.S. #PrisonCamp that administration officials said would house the most violent 'worst of the worst' migrants apprehended on American soil.

"'When we got on the [military] plane, they put restraints on our hands, feet, and waist,' said Jose, who requested that his last name not be used out of fear of retribution. 'They searched us and then sat us in a chair, tying us to it and binding our feet together. We hoped it wouldn't be Guantanamo but in the end, that's where we ended up.'

"Jose is one of the more than 170 migrants who spent two weeks at the naval base before being sent to #Venezuela. He told ABC News that while he had a suspicion he was being sent to Guantanamo, he claims U.S. officials never told him and the other migrants where they were being sent.

"'Our minds were racing, thinking we were kidnapped, wondering who would get us out of there,' said Jose. 'Because no one tells you anything.'

"Jose told ABC News that he had traveled to Mexico's northern border to wait for an asylum appointment that he requested through the U.S. Customs and Border Protection app, prior to it being shut down by the #Trump administration. After three weeks of waiting and 'no food or a place to stay,' he decided to surrender to authorities at the U.S. southern border. He was detained at a detention center until he was transferred to Guantanamo."

#ItsGoingDown - This Week in #Fascism #139: Communities Hit Back Against #NeoNazis As #Trump Comes to Power; Thousands Protest Against #ICE & in Solidarity with #TransPeople

February 13, 2025

"The second Trump administration has officially begun and less than a month in, we are already in a #ConstitutionalCrisis. As the #Trumpian state embraces the threat of ignoring court orders, it also risks pushing the US into an all out #TechnoDictatorship. But as the line between the State and the far-Right becomes increasingly blurred – the question must be asked, what does the antifascist struggle mean when an oligarch like Trump is in power? We don’t have any easy answers, but antifascists have a lot of skills that we can bring to the table: both in terms of analysis, understanding the players in the unfolding terrain, and skills that we can share with people.

"More importantly, we have movement memory of battles fought and lessons learned: from the working-class kids who formed the backbone of #AntiRacistAction (#ARA) and took on the #KKK and neo-Nazi skinheads, to the fight against the #AltRight during Trump’s first term, which saw tens of thousands of people hitting the streets against #WhiteSupremacists. These past struggles can inspire and inform what is happening today.

"And there’s a lot to do. With the pardoning of the January 6th rioters, Trump has signaled that far-Right loyalists will receive a pass from the State to engage in violence against enemies of the regime. This is a reality that only amplifies what we saw during the first Trump administration, when Chad Wolf’s DHS pushed for #antifascists to be targeted by law enforcement and for the state to downplay the threat from the far-Right. This move lead to federal forces descending on Portland, OR during the #GeorgeFloydUprising, and the outright assassination of #MichealReinoehl.
