I lost a lot of sleep fretting over a poorly-insulated house in New Hampshire that was prohibitively expensive to retrofit.
While tossing and turning, I imagined solutions enabled by synthetic biology. Like organisms that grow to fill wall cavities, then die leaving inert closed-cell foam. Or that grow to seal windows in the fall and dissolve in the spring. All for practically no cost.

It appears to have been a close call. Clearly lessons have been learned from #Grenfell and those are ongoing in terms of removing flammable cladding.
The risks and attention to detail for #retrofitting these blocks should not be underestimated.

2002: Mit der Energieeinsparverordnung (EnEV) 2002 wurde eine Obergrenze von ca. 100 kWh/m² für Neubauten eingeführt.
2009: Mit der EnEV 2009 wurde der zulässige Jahresprimärenergiebedarf für Neubauten um ca. 30 % gesenkt. Das ergibt einen Richtwert von ca. 70 kWh/m².
2014: Die EnEV 2014 senkte den Jahres-Primärenergiebedarf erneut um 25 %, was einem Grenzwert von ca. 52,5 kWh/m² entspricht.
2016: Mit der EnEV 2016, wurde der Primärenergiebedarf nochmals um durchschnittlich 25 % gesenkt. Das ergibt einen Richtwert von ca. 40 kWh/m².
2021: Mit dem Gebäudeenergiegesetz (GEG) bleibt der Jahres-Primärenergiebedarf grob gesagt bei den Werten der EnEV 2016.

Just been to a #Norwich for Warm Homes talk on #retrofitting. The turn out exceeded my expectation - the room was full to bursting!
It’s great to realise so many people want to be on board this journey to insulate their homes and make them more energy efficient.
It’s daunting knowing the huge costs and the lack of skilled and qualified coordinators, assessors, designers and installers in our area to make it happen.
The government must do more to make retrofit accessible to all.
So the opinion piece I wrote for my local paper last week about #Sunak frittering away a vital decade on climate action, making it almost impossible for UK to reach #NetZero by 2050 because of his delays to #retrofitting homes, has morphed into a letter…just picked up a print copy of it.

The #LomaPrieta earthquake was stronger and shallower than the Morocco earthquake and the #Morocco quake is seeing hundreds of times more death.
A fair bit of our local sales tax in the #SFBayArea goes to #infrastructure #retrofitting for #quake #safety and I don't want to hear a single peep of complaint about that. It really matters.
I don't blame Morocco one bit, they aren't especially wealthy and earthquakes like this are rare there. But I think the illustration is relevant.
#solar power is a growing industry and taking big bucks away from the #coal based #electric industry. But it still depends on the existing #electricGrid and financed by private loans. It initially doubles your electric bill for a year from what I understand. In fact, calculating its financing is so complicated at the start that you need serious thinking. This puts so many people off. It should be simplified and become a part of a general #climate change #retrofitting policy.
