👋🏼 #introduction though I'm not new here, but moved to my #selfhosted #Mastodon instance half a year ago 📦.

I'm Florian 👨🏼‍💻, #IT/computer science student at #RWTHAachen 🇩🇪🎓 and #tech enthusiast.
I do lots of #selfhosting in my #homelab, develop apps with #Flutter 📲, but also websites 🌐 and other #software 💻.

I'm very passionate about emergency #medicine 🩺 and work as a #paramedic (Rettungssanitäter 🇩🇪) on the #ambulance 🚑 in #ems 🚨.
I love water sports, be it #sailing ⛵, #diving 🤿 or #swimming 🏊🏼‍♂️.

So, my conclusion after tinkering with "docker compose" and Synapse for a few weeks, is that you're really not meant to access network services on the Docker host (like Postfix) from a container.

("docker run" is a different story, but less relevant for my use case.)

I haven't seen a single working example of this (no socat please). So, either I'm really bad at reading, or nobody is doing it this way successfully.

"it's not self hosting if it's behind a CDN" is a bullshit take.

(Should probably be #fastly instead of #cloudflare )

You can build and run open source software on your own domain and I'd call that self hosting.

Run it on a good VPS? Still self hosting even if you can't rent a rack in a datacenter or don't own fast Internet.

Your #selfhosting is still valid as long as you administer it and it's not the big socials.

What’s the state of the art in SMTP servers these days? I see so many boosts of “what’s the secure alternative email server” questions, and self-hosting still seems overly hard. Contrast to the eleventy billion ways to host web sites and dynamic content…

So the #synology X25 refresh lineup just popped out. Should be arriving in May.

RS2825RP+ (AMD V1780B, 10GbE)
DS1825xs+ (AMD V1780B, 10GbE)
DS1825+ (AMD V1500B, 2x 2.5GbE)
DS1525+ (AMD V1500B, 2x 2.5GbE)
DS925+ (AMD V1500B, 2x 2.5GbE)
DS725+ (AMD R1600, 1x 2.5GbE)
DS425+ (Intel J4125, 1x 2.5GbE)
DS225+ (Intel J4125, 1x 2.5GbE)
DS625slim (Intel J4125, 1x 2.5GbE)

Nothing major apart from network and RAM upgrades. Steady as always

After asking here about decentralized/self-hosted chat options akin to Slack and Discord, I started playing with Matrix last night.

Got my own server up and running pretty easily.

A friend and I have been kicking around ideas for a chat app with a customizable and flexible UI that can be tailored to your communication and thinking style, allowing for deep threads and cross-linking of threads and messages.

Almost like a mindmap, in a way, but for communication.

So many communication tools force us into a linear way of thinking and communicating, and I'm curious to explore what a non-linear communication tool could look like.

Need assistance with reproducable server

Hello server/hosting/devops/sysops fedi! 🫶

I've enjoyed using NixOS. I like it because it allows me to recreate my server very easily when moving hosting providers. I don't want to bind myself to a hosting provider because it's an instance of vendor lock-in.

However, when using NixOS, I've often experienced that support for certain newer services (e.g. Dendrite) was not good (and writing Nix unfortunately feels very inaccessible and unintuitive to me). Also, there was no way to make sure I wasn't using compromised packages (since vulnix was discontinued), making my server vulnerable to CVEs and supply chain attacks.

Guix' Scheme language feels very verbose and cumbersome to read to me, so I'm not sure I want to go that route either.

Therefore, my question is: Can I get the reliable reproducability of NixOS with a different tool or set of tools as well? Ideally without the cons mentioned above, of course. :)

Thank you for your time! 💜
