Ofcom’s proposals will allow <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/mobile" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mobile</span></a> networks and <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/satellite" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>satellite</span></a> operators to connect customers through space, benefiting people and businesses in remote areas. With 'direct-to-device' technology, satellites can send signals directly to smartphones, enabling calls, texts, and internet access where mobile coverage is unavailable. This technology could improve connectivity in rural areas, remote villages, mountains, and even provide back-up during outages. Ofcom is consulting on this plan, aiming for a roll-out as early as this year, potentially transforming coverage across the UK.<br><a href="https://www.ofcom.org.uk/spectrum/space-and-satellites/standard-smartphones-to-receive-signal-from-space/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">ofcom.org.uk/spectrum/space-an</span><span class="invisible">d-satellites/standard-smartphones-to-receive-signal-from-space/</span></a></p>
