The Paul Temple series was popular in Germany. Arguably, German audiences appreciated the series more than British audiences. Three of the comic strips appeared in colour, in German. They were Double Event, 1957, The Phantom Fireman, 1957, and Blackmailed Bridegroom, 1958. For reasons that are not clear, some frames are missing from this collection.

Britons seem to be suffering from a twentieth century social disease with the idea that possessions are more important than people. Sociologist Dr Howard Jones said there was reason to believe that the affluent society was a bad thing. He added that as people become more affluent society’s standards and behaviour will decline.

58. Who Knew

January 1963 was a tumultuous time. Britain was in the grip of the Big Freeze, General de Gaulle had rejected Britain’s bid to join the Common Market, and two journalists had been jailed over the Vassall Affair - the Government thus alienating the Press. Furthermore, the Edgecombe trial had started with Christine Keeler a key witness.

TV stars come and go. There are exceptions, of course, like Eamonn Andrews who seems to go on forever, David Jacobs who popped up on both channels recently, and Peter Dimmock who is now a BBC executive. For most though fame is fleeting. The life of a TV star may be gay and prosperous, but it is also very short.

THINKING ABOUT PERMACULTURE…
It was when I was looking for a book on the shelf that a couple other titles caught my eye. I never did find that elusive book I was looking for, however the sight of those other titles made me realise that the saying that new ideas stand on the shoulders of those that came before was as true for the permaculture design system as much as it was for any other innovative idea.

Bill Mollison and David Holmgren knew this because they described permaculture as a synthesis drawing on a range of sciences and traditional practices. Perhaps this makes permaculture more of an iteration of those things it drew upon rather than a new invention. What was new was how they were synthesised to create a comprehensive and coherent system of design, so maybe we can say that permaculture was assembled from ideas, sciences and practices that were aleady in existence and that Bill and David brought together.

Anyway, following up on my noticing those books on the shelf I did my own assembly by bringing together some of the thinkers who were an influence on the early years of permaculture, those increasingly distant days when the design system was still in formulation. Maybe you know of others. If so, let's know in the comments.

In the London Evening News, the Paul Temple comic strip ran from 11 December 1950 until 1 May 1971. According to the Buggles, “Video Killed the Radio Star”. In Paul Temple’s case, the television series killed the comic strip - the television series featured a rival newspaper, hence the axe.

Frank Derry, 68, received an X-ray for a persistent cold. The X-ray revealed that he had a bullet in his lung, the legacy of a wound inflicted in May 1917. Doctors at the time treated the wound, but did not notice the one and a half inch bullet. Mr Derry’s current doctors have advised him not to have the bullet removed.

56. Into the Limelight

Christine Keeler entered the limelight when seven shots were fired from a pistol. At one o’clock on 14 December 1962 John Edgecombe leapt out of a minicab outside 17 Wimpole Mews, Marylebone in a highly agitated state. Edgecombe fired five shots at the locks on the front door and two shots into the building. Then he ran away.

Gay Gordon is on the Big Ride Round. It has been Go, Go, Go all the way for American astronaut Gordon Cooper. Early today he was gaily whirling around the world in his spaceship Faith Seven. He said, “What a thrill! What a thrill! It looks real pretty here. I feel comfortable, real comfortable. In fact, I had a little nap.”

55. Stephen Ward the Spy

In the early 1960s Stephen Ward presented himself as a spy. According to Christine Keeler, in her autobiography Secrets and Lies, members of the intelligence services, and people later unmasked as spies, were in and out of his flat all the time. Christine made cups of tea for them, and delivered messages.

The Independent Television Authority is to control the content of programmes on ITV. They will be able to ban any item of which they do not approve. The main problem is not with British programmes, but with American imports, which are often considered too violent.

54. The End of the Affair - Version #2

Regarding the end of their thirty-two day affair, Christine Keeler’s version differed to John Profumo’s. According to Christine’s memoirs published in the News of the World, the affair ended when John Profumo demanded that she should stop living with Stephen Ward, and she refused.

Grete Wiltschka, 22, from Vienna has offered to give Ray Charles her left eye. When Ray Charles heard of the offer, he said, “Her sacrifice would be too much for any man to ask. Life is still life, whether one is able to see people or not. Eyesight doesn’t bother me much.”

Paul Temple appeared in many formats: novels, comic strips, radio plays, films and a television series. Steve, Paul Temple’s wife, was played by a variety of actresses, but for facial similarity I think this strip drawn by John McNamara in December 1962 and Ros Drinkwater in the television series in 1970 come closest.
