Financial Times: Meet the LinkedIn superusers. “[Paul] Verrico is one of the platform’s superusers — professionals that have amassed networks sometimes reaching tens or even hundreds of thousands of people, which they use to build their brand. For these users, LinkedIn is no longer just a recruitment site but a space to publish content relating to their work, to self-promote, share […]

finally in print, the last puzzle piece in a decade of thinking about communication across social networks from the perspective of ideal rational agents: how do we factor in ‚dependence‘ - the fact that the same underlying evidence may, for example, reach us via multiple different reports, giving rise to double counting?

There is a strong intuition that multiple independent observations should carry more weight than dependent observations. But how much more?

We show that there is no (known) answer to this normative question in the general case. This renders a fundamental feature of human testimony unsolvable, meaning that acquiring knowledge via the testimony of others is much harder than typically assumed

#SocialNetworks that are fed by an #algorithm are causing much harm to you. Just one example of many: karl-voit.at/2024/07/13/social

Please do convince your friends and relatives to try out a healthy alternative like the #Fediverse here: karl-voit.at/2024/06/18/Fedive

When you visit your friends and family, tell them about not having #endlessscrolling or #doomscrolling. Tell them about being able to read unfiltered comments and articles. Tell them about not destroying your mental health all the time, following some #influencers that show a wrong picture of the world and the people.

Tubefilter: RedNote wants to be more than just a TikTok alternative. Will Westerners buy in?. “Earlier this year, when it looked certain that TikTok would be banned in the United States, many displaced users flocked to RedNote, an app often characterized as the ‘Chinese Instagram.’ Two months later, RedNote’s momentum has stalled, but its leaders are seeing the spike in American interest as […]

TechCrunch: A new social app is fighting rage-bait. “Most existing social networking apps incentivize rage-bait, including Instagram, X, TikTok, and YouTube. These platforms have programs for creators that pay them based on how many views they get, and enraging content tends to draw more attention. Sez Us wants to break this cycle by allowing users to rate other users’ posts for approval, […]

"I have returned from my quick trip to Austin for a few days at the South by Southwest conference. Last time I was there, Silicon Valley Bank fell apart, which made for a rather entertaining weekend to spend as a fly on the wall around the various tech executives who make their pilgrimages to the conference. By that point in 2023, the shine had already mostly worn off on the crypto excitement compared to the crypto extravaganzas that characterized SXSW during crypto’s peak hype years.

This time, although crypto prices are back up, crypto excitement didn’t seem to be.

There was a great panel about “Openness Under Pressure”, which touched on similar points as my recent newsletter about open access amid widespread AI scraping. Bluesky CEO Jay Graber took the mainstage for a keynote with the inimitable tech journalist (and Bluesky board member) Mike Masnick. She wore an oversized black t-shirt printed with black text that read mundus sine Caesaribus (“a world without Caesars”). It was immediately recognizable to those who had seen Mark Zuckerberg’s custom black-on-black aut Zuck aut nihil (“Zuck or nothing”) shirt at a Meta event last year, an egomaniacal play on aut Caesar aut nihilb and a nod to the emperor after whom Zuckerberg has long styled himself.

Her message was clear: we need a world resilient to the outsized power of Zuckerbergian billionaire emperors. And we need platforms that are, as she and Masnick put it, “billionaire-proof”. I couldn’t agree more.

Sadly, for now we remain in a very much not billionaire-proof world, so I will now update you on how that’s all been going."

Fred Rocha: How I use Mastodon in 2025. “These are exciting times to be on Mastodon, one of the flavours of the Fediverse. "#TikTok represents somethin radically different from other #socialnetworks that came before it… is really the first #socialmedia platform that is truly decentralized. What I mean by this is: It’s not based on #followergraphs. If you look at Instagram Reels or Twitter, how many people see a video or a piece of content is highly correlated with how many followers that person has. TikTok is a lot more random…a lot of content that never would have gotten a lot of views on Twitter or on TV to suddenly escape containment and get directly into the eyes of people who don’t care that much about #politics."

"The Terrorgram story is part of a much larger 21st century phenomenon. Over the past two decades, massive social networks like X, Facebook and Telegram have emerged as a powerful force for both good and evil. The ability to connect with like-minded strangers helped fuel uprisings like the Arab Spring and Iran’s pro-democracy movements. But it has also aided extremists, including brutal jihadist organizations like the Islamic State group and white supremacists around the world.

Telegram, which is massively popular outside of the U.S., boasted an array of features that appealed to Humber and her fellow Terrorgammers. They could send encrypted direct messages, start big chat groups and create public channels to broadcast their messages. In the span of five years, they grew Terrorgram from a handful of accounts into a community with hundreds of chats and channels focused on recruiting would-be terrorists, sharing grisly videos and trading expertise on everything from assassination techniques to the best ways to sabotage water systems and electrical transmission lines. On one of her many accounts, Humber posted step-by-step instructions for making pipe bombs and synthesizing HMTD, a potent explosive.

Humber went by a series of usernames but was eventually publicly exposed by a group of California activists. ProPublica and FRONTLINE reviewed chat logs — some provided by the Australian anti-facist research organization The White Rose Society — court records and Humber’s other digital accounts to independently confirm her identity."
