With the escalation of violent interceptions by Libya and Tunisia, with the support of the EU, other dangerous migration routes have been used by people seeking safety in Europe.For those trying to reach Europe from Senegal, the crossing is nearly 10 times longer than other Mediterranean routes. Many boats, without proper navigation systems, are veering off course and some are drifting across the Atlantic to the shores of Brazil, taking hundreds of lives with them.These are not numbers. Under the so-called Piantedosi Law, Italian authorities have detained search and rescue ships 22 times since it came into force in 2023 preventing them from assisting people in distress at sea. These detentions are based on unfounded accusations and unlawful demands. Authorities wrongly accuse ship crews of uncooperative behaviour towards the so-called Libyan Coast Guard (scLCG), despite the scLCG's attempts to force people in distress back to Libya, violating international law. The law mandates NGO rescue ships head immediately to an assigned port after a rescue, ignoring other boats in distress, which contradicts international maritime law. The Louise Michel was detained for not sailing to the assigned port, which was not the closest safe port available, due to adverse weather conditions.The Piantedosi Law aims to reduce the presence of NGO ships at sea, limit their rescue availability, and prevent arrivals to Italy. Compass CollectiveUPDATE 2024/05/01 - TROTAMAR III - TRAININGS (english below)Heute hat die Crew unseres Einsatzes #3/24 mit den Trainings im Hafenbecken von Licata begonnen. Mit einem zweiten Schlauchboot, welches die Seenotrettungs-NGOs in Licata gemeinsam beschafft haben, üben wir Rettungssituationen, die wir auf der Fluchtroute im Mittelmeer erwarten. Dabei geht es um eine erste Kommunikation mit den Menschen oder die Übergabe von Rettungswesten bis zur Rettung einer Person aus dem Wasser. Unser Ziel ist, mit den Mitteln an Bord die Menschen auf den seeuntüchtigen Booten zu stabilisieren, bis Unterstützung von der italienischen Küstenwache oder einem größeren Rettungsschiff kommt. There are reports about kidnapping by criminal gangs at the Tunisian ports following interceptions by the Tunisian Garde National (TGN).Yesterday, we spoke about how invisible shipwrecks are on the rise, caused by poor-quality iron boats departing from Tunisia. Those who survive and are intercepted by the TGN are expulsed to desert areas on the Libyan and Algerian border. However, sometimes, when transfer buses aren't available, they are left at <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Sfax" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#Sfax</a> port by the TGN. Once again, we see the EU-funded so-called Libyan coastguard (scLCG) carrying out extreme acts of violence during a rescue operation in international waters, which has now resulted in the wrongful detention of a rescue ship. The scLCG are well documented for carrying out extremely dangerous manoeuvres, resulting in the capsizing boats in distress, however, now a more regular occurrence is the firing of live bullets.Just days ago, the scLCG was caught on camera firing at @RescueMed 's RHIB whilst carrying out a rescue of 58 people, risking the lives of all those onboard. Even though the dangerous criminal actions of the scLCG resulted in mass panic and people jumping into the water, Mare Jonio has now been detained for 20 days by Italy, accused of encouraging "migrants to jump into the sea" to hinder the scLCG operation. Shouldn't it be the ones carrying out the unlawful vicious attack being charged?Last month we also saw footage of the scLCG firing shots during a rescue being carried out by @soshumanity_en. Humanity 1 was also detained following the false report from scLCG, this was later dropped, but only after the civil court in Crotone called it an "injustice of the measure issued".Louise Michel stands in solidarity with the 58 survivors rescued by <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/MareJonio" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#MareJonio</a>. Our engineers have torn the whole engine into pieces and put them part by part together again. Soon, the ready-to-use engine will be brought back to the ship so that the Louise Michel can sail back to the central Mediterranean.We will be back at sea as soon as possible with refurbished engines ready to stand in solidarity with people on the move.
