I don't know about you all, but ever since I learned #SteveJobs once told his people to get rid of the F(unction) keys on Apple keyboards "because only nerds know what they do", I've been like, "Challenge ACCEPTED" and slowly been learning how to use them. So handy! 🙂

The ones I have memorized and use often:
F2 - rename that dang file
F11 - full screen on ye olde browser
F12 - activate full nerd mode (developer console in the browser)

What y'all got for favorite keyboard shortcuts? #NerdLife

Thinking of NEXTSTEP this morning...I'd guess many aren't aware of the unusual color display arrangement.

The NeXTstation, which was the first "affordable" color solution for NEXTSTEP, has a 16-bit framebuffer, but instead of rendering the desktop in 65,536 colors (as per Windows or Mac hardware, say), it rendered in 12-bit color with 4-bits of alpha channel (transparency).

That means it had a palette of 4096 colors, with all colors available at once on the display (not like, say, the Amiga or Apple IIgs with a 4096 color palette, but video modes with a small subset of those colors available (yes, yes, HAM mode excluded). Additionally, anything on the screen had 16 levels of opacity available.

It's interesting to see in person, on the actual hardware (especially on a good LCD display). With dithering, it looks very close to 24-bit truecolor.

(The NeXT Dimension color board for the Cube allowed 24-bit color with 8-bits alpha, but that was not so frequently used -- less so than most NeXT hardware even...)

But that's not nearly the weirdest that NEXTSTEP-capable hardware got, when it came to color video display...

#DennisRitchie is a legendary developer since #C is still a popular language. The impact of his #MULTICS #UNIX related work on #IRIX #NeXT and #OSX stretches over to #Linux #Android and #iOS as well. Somehow, most users are better aware of what #SteveJobs had stolen from #Xerox.

People throw the word #genius around because they do not know what the qualifications are.

Geniuses are few and rare as rocks in horse manure. Off the top of my head I can only think of von Neuman and Curie. But some #siliconvalley executive?

The amount of narcissism, sycophancy, spiritual co-opting, grifting and golden calf worshipping that goes on in those circles is so far from genius that it makes the intellect curdle.

#SteveJobs was no genius
and #ElonMusk is a moron.

Komplexer gedacht: Spieleklassiker Breakout in neuer Variante

“Swisher’s memoir, #BurnBook, (yes, it’s a reference to the classic teen film, Mean Girls) was released early last year in the US, but in light of what’s going on in America now, it’s more pertinent than ever.

While it’s a memoir of Swisher’s career as a #journalist who was practically embedded in Silicon Valley from the industry’s earliest days (with a contact book that featured everyone from #SteveJobs to #Musk), Burn Book also offers insights into the entrepreneurs and investors, and the backstories behind companies including #Amazon, #Yahoo and #Google, notably detailing the dysfunctional tech bros behind the scenes. She’s regarded as Silicon Valley’s “most feared” but also “most liked” journalist.

Burn Book is also, Swisher says, “a warning, in many ways” of what’s happening in the US now.

And just what the hell is going on? “It’s a constitutional crisis – that’s what we’re calling it here,” Swisher says.

She is shocked by Musk’s new role.”

Bugger I missed Kara talking at my Alma Mater, guess this article and the book will do.

I admired #ElonMusk before certain political circles thought it was cool (and when others decided it wasn’t). Why? His entrepreneurial genius at #Tesla, #SpaceX, #boringcompany, etc. Same with #SteveJobs — they are Edisons or Galileos of our time. I don’t have to agree with someone 💯 to appreciate gifts. I wish Jobs had been a Christian, I pray Musk would become one — but I can see someone I don’t think is the epitome of morality and still appreciate creative genius.
