I have this wild idea that simply defining #techJobs by their #responsibilities instead of their #techskills could ease many ailments of the #techsector :

- #imposterSyndrome
- #techExcptionalism
- failure to hire & promote #women and #minotities
- chronic under-appreciation of #softSkills
- #engineer tunnel vision
- over-focus on a specific #Technology
- lack of definition around senior roles
- #manager Vs IC tension
- EMs doing #coding rather than #management
- The #10x / #rockstar #Dev myth

It was the failure of #WiiU that led to Iwata going to the lengths that not many #CEOs of large tech companies have done, which is to take a 50% pay cut to avoid mass company #layoffs. At the same time, other top executives reduced their salaries by 20%.

And it’s a decision that people are being reminded of now as the #TechSector continues to suffer widespread layoffs in the first month of 2024

@danjac
The #TechSector is still growing rapidly, and #WebDevelopment is no exception.

"Overall employment of web developers and digital designers is projected to grow 23 percent from 2021 to 2031, much faster than the average for all occupations."

I used to work at #JPMorganChase, until I woke up one morning and realized that I had come to a crossroads: I could either keep working there and putting money in the pockets of evil billionaires, or I could be a good person and find somewhere else to work. It took me a while to get out and find a new employer, but that was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

It all comes down to #CoreValues. If your current employer's policies are at odds with your core values, you should find a new employer. You might not find one right away, but the sooner you start searching and applying, the sooner you'll find an employer whose values align with your own, and the sooner you can quit working for #TheBadGuys.

My employer has been enjoying record profitability and has been thanking me and my colleagues for our contributions! Of course, we are encouraged to make a big deal about what a Great Place to Work we are.

The profits come from "increasing" salaries to less than they were 2 years ago, in real terms.

#TechSector employers can get away with this due to a disastrously low level of unionisation. For profitable companies, matching #inflation should be the pay adjustment baseline.

I’ve run into a few people who are salaried (not contracted) by more than one employer — taking advantage during the pandemic of remote work. One person boasted of 3 full time positions (the bosses were unaware of the other employers). So he’s pulling 3 good paychecks. Clever, but how ethical? Even if a genius at time management, these are jobs that others might need. Maybe a good reason to get people back on site? #Ethics #RemoteWork #Employment #TechSector

"the document proposes that new laws shift liability to software makers that fail to take reasonable precautions to secure their products and services. The bills would be drafted in coordination between Congress and the private sector and include “an adaptable safe harbor framework” to protect companies that “securely develop and maintain their software products and services.”"

@GhostOnTheHalfShell

We need to be mindful of the vast #inequality that appears to be normalised. No matter what anyone says a $300,000 (USD) yearly wage in the world today is a corrupting amount of money.

Inequality creates societal problems.

There seem to be references to #SanFrancisco, and #LosAngeles in this, but if the #techSector is so great it should not matter where a person lives thus the wage is not justified.
