A story with more hyperbole (and therefore subtext) than I remember! Its protestations barely mask Usher's curse.

A Roger Corman "great" with Vincent Price dominating even the frames he isn't in. It captures the Poe story in unintended ways . . . .

#Watching THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER

*Finally* getting around to finishing this as I didn't feel like binging due to the repetitive structure to the episodes (ANOTHER Usher dead, again?).
Haunting of Hill House is still my favorite Flanagan #Netflix limited series.
Like this more than Midnight Mass because of the Poe callbacks and the very creative kills.
Unfortunately, like Midnight Mass, there are narrative-killing monologues and exposition dumps. You can hear a character (usually Bruce Greenwood) start a navel-gazer, call DoorDash and by the time the Very Important Monologue finishes, your food will be there.
You feel like you should be taking notes like you'll be tested on this later. Every performer is well cast, especially an against-type Carla Gugino. Mark Hamill gives good growl.
8 episodes where you could have done 6 if it weren't for the speechifying.
Took it long enough to fall.

TV Miniseries Rave: #TheFalloftheHouseofUsher

You have got to watch "The Fall of the House of Usher" on Netflix.

It's horror with fantasy elements, social commentary,, and a family as toxic as any you will ever encounter. It's #EdgarAllenPoe meets the #Sackler family of pharmaceutical infamy.

I don't care much for horror, but this was just gorgeously done. The writing, acting, and staging are amazing. The cast is incredible. So are the costumes.

Warning: It is very violent.

My slightly more in-depth review of Flanagan's "The Fall of the House of Usher" series (minor spoilers):

For me, the series nailed the dedication to Poe's most popular works. As a love-letter to Poe's writings, it's great. It's not a direct adaptation by any means, but it is a very fun romp through Poe's better known works. It even achieves some depth in a few parts.

But it stumbles in the other intended themes/messages especially at the end. 🧵 #TheFalloftheHouseofUsher #EdgarAllanPoe

I finished Flannigan's The Fall of the House of Usher. A very quick take:

As a Poe-inspired horror series, it was entertainingly violent and gory. It mostly did good at going beyond easy references to pull at least some depth from the stories/poems.

As a series dealing with opioid crisis and the evils of capitalism, it stumbles at the end. It goes preachy while ditching the art of metaphor and symbols.

Enjoyable overall. #TheFalloftheHouseofUsher #EdgarAllanPoe

Tamerlane's breakdown in ep. 6 of #TheFalloftheHouseofUsher is referencing Poe's story William Wilson (the name of her husband character in the show). In the original WW story, the main character has a double or doppelgänger who slowly destroys his life over years.

Though, in the end, there may have been no double, but a representation of his own self-destructive spirit. Self destruction is a theme in many of Poe's works. #EdgarAllanPoe #williamwilson
