They're also callbacks to material written in Tolkien's own youth. Like the ancient swords in the troll den in The Hobbit. He responds to this by sending "a mighty army of spies" to look for the guy. Huh?</p>

This suggests an earlier version of the text where the fountains were 50 metres tall, and that Tolkien *calculated* how many fathoms this was when he switched to an older unit of measurement.</p>
