Martin Rundkvist<p>There's a strange preoccupation with underground rivers in the first version av The Fall of Gondolin. First Tuor travels down one of them to get out of Dor-lómin. Then after a huge aimless detour he travels up another one to get into Gondolin.</p><p><a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/tolkien" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tolkien</span></a></p>
Martin Rundkvist<p>Has anybody made a timeline of which year <a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/Tolkien" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Tolkien</span></a> 's countless fictional characters are first mentioned in writing?</p>
Martin Rundkvist<p>I can't get over the fact that the writing process that led to The Lord of the Rings started 30 years earlier with a completely aimless and pointless story about Tuor hiking.</p><p><a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/tolkien" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tolkien</span></a></p>
Tyson, Chicken Rancher 🐓<p>Middle Earth is my go-to escape from reality. But it’s not only escape: I feel that it’s written to strengthen and aid the reader for life, just like Gandalf’s purpose was to encourage men, elves, and dwarves to resist Sauron. </p><p><a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/middleearth" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>middleearth</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/tolkien" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tolkien</span></a> <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/lotr" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>lotr</span></a></p>
Martin Rundkvist<p>It's pretty neat in Tolkien's mature work how when characters and events from the 1st Age pop up in the 3rd Age, they're not just revenants from Middle-Earth's youth. They're also callbacks to material written in Tolkien's own youth. Like the ancient swords in the troll den in The Hobbit. Like the Balrog in LotR.</p><p><a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/tolkien" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tolkien</span></a> <a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/books" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>books</span></a></p>
Martin Rundkvist<p><a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/Tolkien" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Tolkien</span></a> 's earliest Middle-Earth fiction again from 1917:</p><p>Melko hears that there's this one guy hiking along the river Sirion. He responds to this by sending "a mighty army of spies" to look for the guy. Huh?</p>
Martin Rundkvist<p>In "The Fall of Gondolin", <a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/Tolkien" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Tolkien</span></a> informs us that the fountains before the doors of the king's palace shot 27 fathoms into the air, that is, 49.4 metres. This suggests an earlier version of the text where the fountains were 50 metres tall, and that Tolkien *calculated* how many fathoms this was when he switched to an older unit of measurement.</p>

Martin Rundkvist<p>Kind of funny that people or orcs in 3rd Age Mordor would name a baby boy Gothmog after a 1st Age balrog. It's a bit like how over 5,500 men in Sweden are currently named Loki.</p><p><a href="https://archaeo.social/tags/tolkien" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tolkien</span></a></p>
