There’s an interesting article on #AppleInsider about why Apple won’t be manufacturing iPhones in the US any time soon. Aside from the big difference in labour costs between the US and China, there’s this:

“Vocational training is not seen as taking the "lower path" in China, while many other countries have de-emphasized vocational trades. Because these trades are still considered worthwhile, China has a wealth of tooling engineers.”

AppleInsiderUS iPhone production's main challenge is a century of big business labor decisionsDespite repeated political promises recently saying otherwise, because of federal wants and big business needs over the last 100 years, the U.S. lacks both the low-cost labor and specialized manufacturing workforce needed to bring iPhone production home.

Trades are so expensive any more.

But these plumbers are brothers and grew up nearby and are part of a local company owned by the son of the guy who started it many years ago.

And the price shocked me at how low it was. Downright reasonable.

I told them they were going to make me cry and they laughed and said they’re not out to screw people just do some good work.

They’re coming back Friday to do a bunch more now.

Incredibly grateful.

Hey friends. Another topic I didn't think was controversial but was surprised talking to other instructors yesterday. Let me know what you think.

A bad day in programming is way better than a bad day in pretty much any other job.

* and still often better than a good day in many jobs too.

La Shawn Ford is behind provisions in the state budget that allocate $10 million for a new Prepare for Illinois’ Future program, which would “offer comprehensive test preparation, free of charge and at no cost to students” in an effort to help them pass their licensure or certification. #education #licensing #medical #trades #Illinois news.wttw.com/2024/12/21/new-i

Nightingale Muzak

The English gentleman John Evelyn spent almost one year in Venice and Padua in 1645–1646.

In his diary, he wrote about the Mercerie, which are a series of alleyways between the Rialto and St Mark, traditionally occupied by merchants of textiles.

One particular detail in his description of these streets in the mid-1600s struck me: the "innumerable cages of nightingales which they keep, that entertain you with their melody from shop to shop."

Anyone else noticed the sheer number of angry men nicked for the race #riots in #England and #NI who seem to be employed in the skilled #trades ? Mostly #construction and #maintenance - this is worrying as its possible smarter ones may decide not to riot (as they will get nicked quickly) but to sabotage #infrastructure, particularly to make #Starmer look bad / incompetent if he does decide to invest in much needed national infrastructure projects..
