@ben The USA is, and always has been, an empire. We started by colonizing the populated territories west of the original 13 colonies. And we went on from there.

Today, the USA has five inhabited territories:

- American Samoa (Pacific Ocean)
- Guam (Micronesia, North Pacific)
- Northern Mariana Islands (Micronesia, North Pacific)
- Puerto Rico (Caribbean, North Atlantic)
- U.S. Virgin Islands (Caribbean, North Atlantic)

and about 10 uninhabited territories, including Midway Atoll.
