Ceratonia siliqua (carob) growing in the front yard of a small Davis apartment building. It provides year 'round evergreen shade. In places like Davis, you need shade the majority of the year now. #DavisCA #UrbanHeatIsland #Carob
"San Diego’s urban forest, 2017"
"A 2017 analysis of the urban forest in San Diego, California, reveals that this area has an estimated 4.9 million live trees across all ownerships...estimated to store about 289,000 tons of carbon...valued at $49.3M. In addition, it is estimated that these trees remove about 34,600 tons of carbon/yr..."

@ai6yr Some people would have you believe this is related to the #UrbanHeatIsland. It is important to note that Phoenix's climate site at the airport has been surrounded by urban development for decades and there hasn't been a substantial change to increase the UHI in recent years.
Even if this were solely a UHI story (it isn't), Phoenix is one of the largest cities in the US. Local human driven #ClimateChange is important to talk about too.
In my neighborhood, #NYCparks are replacing a (uptown #nyc neglected) grass field w #ArtificialTurf , a #UrbanHeatIsland exacerbater
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S2212095521000845
Parks ReplyGuy says new stuff uses coconut shells not rubber infill so is fine; But w/o évapotranspiration, I doubt it. Bare soil is bad too — the field def needs a rehab
Plus plastic runoff. Sports injuries. Outgassing. Ick.
I thought other cities were banning this stuff.
Thoughts?

#nyc rips out trees and grass to put in #ArtificialTurf because it drains n is cheaper to maintain in spite of its contribution to #UrbanHeatIsland
They assure you that it’s not the old AstroTurf— it has pads n coconut shells not rubber infill
But plastic grass doesn’t evaporate moisture out of its leaves - évapotranspiration- so still gets hot enough to cook an egg
NASA interns clocked some in nyc at 160F on an 85F day

I wonder how much cooler my suburb would be if more households planted shady gardens instead of lawn or artificial turf.

Where there's trees you will see significant heat reduction, making the area more comfortable, & desirable to use.
Surfaces exposed to direct sun, soak heat up, this increases day & night temperatures, it's called the #UrbanHeatIsland Effect.
They also reduce the costs of air conditioning, especially combined with living walls, and roofs.

Streetlights toughen tree leaves due to more photosynthesis, say researchers. This makes them too hard for local insects to chew so their populations in cities dwindle. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/aug/05/all-night-streetlights-make-leaves-inedible-to-insects-study-finds
Surely tho, it applies to all plant leaves in cities, not only trees?
Could be one of the reasons why pretty butterflies are so scarce, I guess.
In my immediate neighbourhood, they changed the mowing and branch-cutting rhythm 2-3 years ago, to combat #drought and #UrbanHeatIsland UHI.
Now they let things grow throughout late spring and summer. And this summer for the first time I have lived here, I saw butterflies! 3 different kinds.
If they dimmed the streetlights, too, maybe it'd increase to 5 or 6 kinds of butterflies?

Every time a car does a parallel park on #SydneyRoad it holds up the movement of all vehicles: cars, delivery trucks, trams and bicycles. Oversized utes doubly so as they need more room to manoeuvre and a larger parking space. Sydney Road needs to be revitalised to prioritise vehicle movement, as well as more pedestrian and cycling space and opportunities to Green the Sydney Road Corridor with canopy trees and vegetation to provide shade and reduce the #UrbanHeatIslandEffect that is exacerbated by global warming.
State government Department of Transport planners and local politicians should be looking at what Paris has done in recent years regarding #activetransport prioritisation and greening city streets, to create a more liveable, friendly and safe environment through Brunswick and Coburg.
Also Prioritisation of accessible tram stops is an essential part of upgrading Sydney Road.
That’s our thoughts on #SydneyRoad as #Chihuahuas who need to cycle along Sydney Road to get to businesses there, and as #ChihuahuasForClimateAction

In Europe #Heatwaves hit the most vulnerable. New study.
Heatwaves in Europe are on the rise, with 57% more people exposed to them in the decade from 2010 to 2019 compared to the preceding ten year period. In densely populated areas, the effects of these extreme heat events are particularly pronounced due to urban features that lead to what is known as the #UrbanHeatIsland effect. In fact, heat stress resulting from heatwaves is the major cause of climate-related premature deaths in Europe.
