In my opinion it is best to start your #boycottus journey by picking the low-hanging fruit first. By this I mean services that are not subject to #networkeffect or #vendorlockin. This gives you easy wins and keeps up the motivation. Good examples are backup and file synchronization services, calendar applications, navigation applications, chat applications for teams and project management software.

You can also end up in a #vendorlockin all by yourself. This can happen unintentionally when you add a lot of value on top of a solution. For example, if you all the bells and whistles in Microsoft 365 or Azure it will be hard for you to decouple yourself from them later. To avoid this prefer solutions that are not vendor-specific whenever you can.

For example, Microsoft used their dominant marketshare to create #vendorlockin in operating systems (Windows), office software (Microsoft Office) and web browsers (Internet Explorer) to sabotage their competitors They did this by intentionally breaking standards compliance (HTML), not having standards (.doc format) and by using "leverage" (i.e. extortion) to force PC manufacturers to pre-install Windows on every system despite availability of alternatives.

Creating #vendorlockin is a classic strategy used by software companies. They do this by making it difficult to get your data out or by intentionally breaking interoperability with other systems.

Maar veel belangrijker: Zorg voor handhaving van de AVG! Het kan niet zo zijn dat een USA partij die in het gehele onderwijs wordt gebruikt nog jaren ongestraft door kan gaan met de grootste dataroof aller tijden.

Dus hebben jullie al een handhavingsverzoek bij de AP gedaan?

En neem dan ook gelijk Google Zoeken en Google Maps mee, dat zijn ook zogenaamde "aanvullende diensten".

Quite so. I just think it will be fine to stick to GitHub for a while. Yet, I or we (depending on the project) need a plan B. And Activity Pub for GitLab with accounts for potentially all collaborators worldwide is not on the horizon. And intricate CI-setups are not simply ported with a few key stroked ...

"You should just use #Ubuntu because it's the easiest one" - this is propaganda for #Shuttleworth and tells me you haven't tried any other distro - or that you use #Arch.

#LinuxMint is fantastic still, #Fedora is my go to recommendation, but with #uBlue and #Bazzite we see a new era of usability focused #distributions.

Add to that the fact that #snaps are a centralizes repository with no third party vendors, and you've got a #vendorlockin.

Ubuntu is the #anticonsumer distribution as a result.
