What an amazing journey!
Book Review #13 for 2025 is Dan Hampton's Vanishing Act:The Enduring Mystery Behind the Legendary Doolittle Raid Over Tokyo. When I read the cover notes for this book, I thought, "I have to read it!" Not all of the famed WW2 Doolittle raiders were focused on Tokyo. One was focused on getting to the Soviet Union. Read why here! @books @bookstodon @histodon #history #WW2 #books
Book Review #12 for 2025 is Erika Robuck's The Invisible Woman. Based on the true life story of Virginia Hall, a pioneering woman spy of WW2. This is good historical fiction that reminds the reader of the sacrifices made by not just men, but also women, in providing support to the Resistance in France. I've enjoyed Erika's writing over the years and this is the first book of hers I have read in awhile.

"The message from those who’ve survived nuclear weapons is clear: Time to end these inhumane weapons of mass destruction. The UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is the only international treaty that outlaws them and all nuclear armed states must join." -- ICAN, an organization working to abolish nuclear weapons. #NoNukes #Japan #Hiroshima #Nagasaki #WW2
"The U.S. selected #Hiroshima partly because of its military significance but also because it had not yet been heavily bombed, so the effects of the atomic bomb could be clearly assessed. Its terrain, flat with surrounding hills, would amplify the blast effects. Additionally, the U.S. wanted to create a “psychological impact” on Japan’s leadership and the public, in fact, at that time, Hiroshima was both a military and a civilian area." https://paxchristi.net/commemorating-hiroshima-and-nagasaki-80-years-of-witness-and-action-for-peace/#toc_From_Hiroshima_and_Nagasaki_A_Journal_by_Giulia #Japan #WW2 #NoNukes

My western #history education never taught me about the #WW2 #WarsawUprising until I followed this podcast last year. Worth a listen for some horrifying if overlooked history. I also urge folks to follow Alina Nowobilska on Bluesky (https://bsky.app/profile/ww2girl1944.bsky.social) or still on X-Twitter (https://x.com/ww2girl1944) as she profiles those who served and died in the uprising #OTD.
The only real lesson of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is that you must have the means to deter others from using nuclear weapons on you. If Ukraine had nukes, would Putin have invaded? If Canada had nukes that could target NYC, Chicago, and DC, would Mango Mussolini threaten to annex Canada? Defense means offensive capacity. That means a safer and more peaceful world. Read your Sun Tzu!

I'm learning a bit about inter-racial violence between USA troops in Britain in the second world war from a book by Ken Lussey.

The 'Battle of Bamber Bridge' was the tip of what must have been a massive timebomb waiting to explode
