The Haunted Hotel and Other Stories by Wilkie Collins contains the 1878 novel The Haunted Hotel and an assortment of rather unconventional ghost stories and uncanny tales. Superb subtle horror from one of the masters.

The Moonstone
Wilkie Collins
Often described as the first mystery novel it’s the first work by Collins I’ve read. The structure works well and Sergeant Cuff is an excellent creation albeit not one who actually takes up huge amounts of the story. The periods he does take centre stage feel remarkably modern, which gives a good idea of the influence the story had on what came later. A few dated aspects as you might expect, but a good read.
Am listening to (and occasionally reading along with) #WilkieCollins #WomenInWhite. It's utterly enjoyable. Mot as epicaslly magnificent as Dickens, but still great. (more gothic and romantic).
