Today on #WomensEpics:
Chandravati's Ramayana

This is a retelling of the Ramayana by a Bengali poet named Chandravati. She lived in the 16th century, and re-wrote the epic to distract herself from heartache.
Her retelling focuses on Sita's perspective, the horrors of war, and compassion between women that crosses battle lines. It survives to this day in the oral tradition.

"#History is powerful, and there’s no better evidence than the attempt to erase it.

As a #historian and as CEO of the #Jewish #Women’s Archive, I’ve staked my career on a theory of change that insists that the stories we tell about the past and the present determine our futures. That’s why I am alarmed — but not surprised — that the #Trump administration has made it a priority to wipe mentions of women, #trans people and #peopleofcolor from sites that celebrate their contributions to #American history and society."

'As part of the sweeping layoffs that rocked the [HHS] Tuesday, the entire staff that oversaw an annual survey to better understand infant and maternal health — and that was considered the gold standard in the field — was placed on administrative leave.

The Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System, or PRAMS, is a dataset of survey responses from people who give birth, both before and after birth.'

Today in Labor History April 2, 1863: Bread riots occurred in Richmond, Virginia, as a result of a drought the previous year, combined with a blockade by the Union Army and overall Civil War-related shortages. Food riots occurred throughout the South around this time, led primarily by women. During the Richmond riot, women broke into storehouses and shops, stealing food, clothing and jewelry before the militia was able to restore order.

The aberrant 1950s model of the nuclear family has been set in stone as the 'traditional' form. But the idea that history began in the 1950s is weird: "the work and crucial roles women have played in society over time are being erased from history".
