The #AFLW #AFLWFinals are about to punish two teams by playing in 34+ degree weather, and one of the teams will have to back it up at the next #Final (prelim) next weekend. At a suburban ground with limited shade and shelter for spectators too

And, of course, no pre-show on TV, because it's important the women aren't treated equally, or they might start to expect a full home-and-away season or something.

abc.net.au/news/2023-08-17/mat I was never any good at sports or athletics (& was teased mercilessly), but a desire to participate meant that I practised at home & sometimes played 4 square at high school. As a young adult, I actually started a workplace based women’s indoor cricket team. We weren’t very good, but our skills improved dramatically. We won the bottom grade final, were promoted, then smashed. My fitness, coordination & confidence all improved. As a young mum, I joined a running club, 5km once a week. Non competitive & social. I now play golf, not regularly, not very well, but we’ll enough to enjoy it & it’s something my partner & I can do together & on holiday. And I walk, do Pilates, have been a gym member etc. My oldest was similar to me as a kid, but played basketball in a church comp, & has gone on to kayak, run & cycle, all non competitive & just for the fun of it. (But Long Covid has been an issue lately.) Supporting girls & women to find something they enjoy & participate in sport is important. Too many don’t get involved if they’re not “good at sport”, retreat from the teasing, or drop out in adolescence. Fitness & confidence suffer & weight issues often follow. Whether it’s team sport, athletics or things like cycling, kayaking etc, physical activity & fitness are important & link to mental health. The days of ladylike women taking up embroidery (nothing wrong with embroidery!) while poor women slave in highly physical work are well behind us. Physical fitness & health should matter to everyone. (I’m aware that I’ve left disabled people out of this. I don’t know much about this space but I know that physical fitness is problematic & often ignored, even when it is possible.) #WomensSport #WomensHealth #Women

Australians are really getting into the Women's World Cup. Tonight our Matildas play England in the Semifinal to decide who plays against Spain. Gonna be crowded screens at parks, clubs, and homes across the country.

"The closer we get to the summit, the harder the wind blows. When it fills the sky fills with tiny ice pellets picked up from the upper slopes, we seek shelter beneath a bank of snow. We have a decision to make. "

The GuardianSki touring without the machismo: a women-led weekend on Cairngorm mountain, ScotlandBy Sam Haddad

Love how women's sport is driving change thanks to commonsense and courageous women. From the netball team refusing to wear a sponsor's logo to support an indigenous teammate and now the AFL W saying teams will no longer have to wear white shorts to 'away' games as competitors don't need any extra stressors such as worries about menstrual bleeding. This is great news for teen girls playing sport too!
