A man from #Derby in the East #Midlands of #UK learned to #read at age 58, having been unable to do so due to #dyslexia and a lack of specialist help over the years. He was overjoyed at being able to read a #Speedway magazine he had kept since the 1980s!

What's the plan for adult learning in small N.W.T. communities? MLAs want to know

I've been working on rebuilding my reading habit.

There was a period of about a year where I could not sit and read for more than a couple of minutes, due to fatigue. I could read a blurb or a quick article, but I couldn't read anything long form. It was really frustrating. I could still write, but I had to limit that, as well.

Now, I'm spending time here and there, between tasks, and sometimes before bed (I'm often too tired when I go to bed, but sometimes I can get through a few pages or a short chapter) reading, and it's slowly getting better! I'm an avid reader, and losing that ability was very upsetting.

Now, I'm actually GETTING THROUGH my book and magazine pile. It's slow, but I'm seeing progress! It's not about counting books read in a year or whatever. It's about getting back to where I can just immerse myself in the worlds within those books and articles and about continuing to learn about the things I care about!

I forgot to add some other hobbies and topics I like!

I am also a #photographer who shoots #Fujifilm #XT5 mirrorless and Canon compact camera.

I love #ContentCreators , #Videography , and #WebDesign too. I try to avoid using Adobe products and use Perpetual or Life Time Deal licences.

I also like #FOSS, #OpenSource, #SelfHost, and learn #WebDesign.

I am against #GenAI. But I am interested in #EthicalAI and #AIforGood #AIforA11y.

Thanks to what happened to Twitter and increased costs of SaaS, I became interested in #Decentralized #SelfHosted #HomeLab stuff.

****

I am a #LifeLongLearner who is interested in #AdultEducation and #A11yInEducation.

Another hobby I hope to return to is #Blogging and #ProcreateArt / #DigitalDrawing.

I listen to almost any music genre except classics, hardcore heavy metal rock, and some raps.

But I love #FolkMusic, #IndieMusic, #ElectricMusic, and #EDM.

My favourite #ElectricDanceMusic are #Psytrance, #Trance, #Techno, #Hardstyle, and #House. I like #raves. Mostly undergrounds or bush parties.

If you are an educator, chances are you've heard, read, or had some conversation about 'healing' in the classroom. Possibly you've been asking yourself what you can do to help people heal. If any of this is true, I wrote this article for you

Grief in education is invisible, but it permeates every aspect of the institution. Naming it feels unimaginable, but we have to find a way if we are going to interrupt cycles of educational harm and envision a different way forward.

For all my higher ed folks, welcome to my Commonly Asked Questions series! In this series, I'm reinterpreting some of higher ed's most tired, trope-ish questions from a trauma-responsive perspective, just to see if we can learn anything from them.

If you have a question you'd like me to take a run at, feel free to post in the comments and I'll give it a run!

As someone who was a serial mature student (BA 25-31/MA - 34/PhD - 35-38/2nd MA - 58-60) I completely agree with Yvonne Williams - adult education is a key to fulfilling aspirations that only come into focus later in life.

To be clear, I think that all levels of education (not just the tertiary level I accessed as an adult) should be available to all ages.

Its never too late to be learning new stuff, nor too late to benefit from it for whatever reason!

Season 1 of the Galactic Cow launched in 2023, and we're starting work on Season 2. It's a great time to revisit your favorite episodes, or listen for the first time. If you are interested in what role education could play in our growth as a species ♥
