The Stories of our Ancestors: Animism and Animation in a more than Human World - a talk in Venice

This is a talk by Tara Douglas as part of the recent conference, "Animal Studies and Ecocriticism in India" hosted by Department of Asian and North African Studies, Ca' Foscari University of Venice.
In the talk, I bring together some tribal stories from India, as well as the new location, Venice.

My coven gathers outdoors with the full moon. There's something about practicing witchcraft in the open air that can't be beat. So despite the cold, we went into the woods, near a lake and practiced our scrying. Have you ever tried scrying, or are you interested in how to do it? Read on...

Scrying is a form of divination in which the practitioner uses a medium to see images. It has been practiced across time, by peoples from all over the world.
What is the nature of the things you see? There's no definitive answer to that. Some will say you see things from past/present/future, others will say that it gives you a glimpse into your subconscious, some see it as a way to commune with deities.

How to do it?
There's many different methods and techniques, so what works for me might not work for you. We started with a meditation to open up. It helps to still your mind and to consciously go into an altered state where you are receptive to signs and signals.

We worked with a moonlit lake and the starry sky.
Fix your gaze on one point, and relax. Let thoughts slip from your mind and gaze at one spot. Things may start to appear in your peripheral vision, but you shouldn't try to look at them directly (because usually they will disappear as soon as you try to chase them).
Try not to immediately interpret what you see, but keep your mind quiet. Interpretation comes later.
It might take some experimentation and practice, like many things it becomes easier as you do it more often.

After you finish scrying, you don't want to leave yourself this open. So cleanse, close and protect yourself. Never forget to say a word of thanks to the place and the medium that you used.

I've written a little guide on ways to harvest plants mindfully, from considerations of sustainability to reciprocity and respect for the plant as a person. I thought it might be especially helpful for anyone who is new to working with plants, or new to an animist approach to interacting with nature. #animism #plantmagick #naturespirituality pnwmichelle.com/2025/03/10/how

Chris Knight on
'On women and jaguars: why perspectivism got it so wrong'

Across Amazonia, myths hold that in early times it was the jaguars, parrots, tapirs and other animals who first invented bows and arrows, cooking fire, ceremonial buildings, religious ceremonies and other complex cultural accomplishments. Then humans stole these things from the animals, elevating themselves above all other creatures – but at the cost of losing their former ability to engage in easy conversation with the animal world. This mythic view of our origins is the reverse of the Darwinian narrative which our own culture holds up as science.

In this talk, #ChrisKnight will introduce a recent trend in social anthropology – known as ‘perspectivism’ – and discuss whether such radically different ways of perceiving our origins and place in nature can be made to converge.

Chris will be speaking LIVE in the Daryll Forde, 2nd Floor of UCL Anthropology Dept, 14 Taviton St, London WC1H 0BW. Come in good time by 6:30pm before doors close please. You can also join on ZOOM ID 384 186 2174 passcode Wawilak

“Though today’s bland pastel Easter decor may suggest Spring is sweet and mild, it is in truth a provocative time of anticipation, eroticism and violence. A fresh swell of incarnate beings all push their way into the world, hungry... The hatching chick uses all its strength to destroy the boundaries of its existence. In that moment, the old creation myths are sung again: the world-egg cracks open, revealing the contained universe.”

Leodrune Press · Introducing GREEN FEASTBy Leodrune Press

I finished this last weekend. It’s a great introduction to Norse Paganism. The author stands firm against fascism. In fact, one reason I picked it up is because, when you read reviews, all of the 1’s are because it’s too “woke” and antifa. Not sure what’s wrong with being antifascist…..Anyway, that and the focus on animism was great as well as his quick but informative explanation of the pantheon, Yggdrasil, and the myths. I really felt very comfortable and kind of “at home” with everything he presented, and I’ve already picked up the follow up book. While I’ll most likely never call myself anything but eclectic, I will definitely be incorporating some of this into my practice (more about this in a later post, perhaps). The only thing is the first exercise, which is for the breath, gives me panic attacks. Maybe I’m doing something wrong? I have other approaches, though, for getting into a relaxed and open state that don’t make me feel like I’m going to pass out and will use those for the rest of the exercises instead. All in all, I highly recommend this.

Dhá Dhrom, Canfea, or the Ardgroom Stone Circle in the Beara Peninsula in Ireland.
Stone circles, dolmen, burial mounds and springs are important in my practice as places of power. These ancestral sites are tremendously powerful. These are the thin places, and by becoming still you can commune with the spirits of place. By honouring these spaces you step into the traditions of ancient humans, and you take your natural place as a being that is part of this great web.

Eating some instant grits + nooch and realizing we don't appreciate microwaves enough. Warm food? That is cooked by a robot? Instantly? This is such a futuristic luxury. It's like something from a science fiction story. It inspires an animistic impulse in me... thanks for making my dinner, little robot buddy...
