Jon Sharp<p>Finally joined the <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/globaltalk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>globaltalk</span></a> today! A gopher log entry is forthcoming, but this moment was many-fails-in-the-making… hard drives, power supplies, ink cartridges… Feels great to enjoy classic <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/AppleTalk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AppleTalk</span></a> networking with friends again. :) Happy <a href="https://mastodon.sdf.org/tags/MARCHintosh" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MARCHintosh</span></a>, all!</p>
Chris Petrilli<p>Mind you, my main contribution in that era was one of the earliest "online" travel applications written for internal Apple use. I'd argue it's still easier to use than anything on the web. We basically fronted SABRE with a full Mac OS experience. <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/appletalk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>appletalk</span></a> <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/globaltalk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>globaltalk</span></a></p>
Chris Petrilli<p>With all the people playing with <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/appletalk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>appletalk</span></a> and <a href="https://hachyderm.io/tags/globaltalk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>globaltalk</span></a>, I'm reminded of when I worked for Apple in the early 1990s, in the "pre IP" days when we ran a global AppleTalk network where you could mount a file server from Cupertino in London. Slowly.</p><p>It was a time.</p>
Steven D. Brewer 🏳️‍⚧️<p>Wow. I watch people having fun exploring <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/GlobalTalk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GlobalTalk</span></a> and, as someone who had to work with <a href="https://wandering.shop/tags/AppleTalk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AppleTalk</span></a> professionally for years, all I can think is, "Brrr… Too soon, man. Too soon."</p>
Will Green<p>"<a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/AppleTalk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AppleTalk</span></a> is a local area network (LAN) that can tie up to 32 Macs or peripherals together... Few offices need to push the network to its limits, which is just as well, because all AppleTalk can realistically handle is between 8 and 10 nodes." matthewcroughanDoes anyone have any time to tell me how you're supposed to make two instances of minivmac (or basilisk tbh), talk to eachother via LocalTalk? I've noticed no traffic in Wireshark on the interfaces that are bound, though `netstat -plntu` does show that LToUDP is happening, just no packets sent at all when using AppleShare inside of the emulator(s). <a class="hashtag" href="https://social.defenestrate.it/tag/appletalk" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#appletalk</a> <a class="hashtag" href="https://social.defenestrate.it/tag/globaltalk" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#globaltalk</a> <a class="hashtag" href="https://social.defenestrate.it/tag/macintosh" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#macintosh</a>

Miguel Arroz<p>I remember I used some utility that allowed sending short messages via AppleTalk. I think I would go to the chooser, select the other user, type a message, and it would appear as an alert dialog on the other Mac. I know it existed because I used it a lot to chat with my neighbour (we had a PhoneNet cable between our apartments). Does anyone remember the name of this thing? <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/GlobalTalk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GlobalTalk</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/AppleTalk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AppleTalk</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/RetroApple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RetroApple</span></a></p>

Kudos!</p><p>Mit Netatalk 4 kann man nun aktuelle Macs und alte 68k-/PowerPC-Macs an einen gemeinsamen AFP-Fileserver hängen.</p><p>Auf knubbelmac.de vergleichen wir AFP-Server mit ihren Features und Voraussetzungen: <a href="http://www.knubbelmac.de/themen/afp-server-vergleich.html" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">http://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">knubbelmac.de/themen/afp-serve</span><span class="invisible">r-vergleich.html</span></a></p><p><a href="https://netatalk.io/4.0/ReleaseNotes4.0.0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">netatalk.io/4.0/ReleaseNotes4.</span><span class="invisible">0.0</span></a></p><p><a href="https://freiburg.social/tags/appletalk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>appletalk</span></a> <a href="https://freiburg.social/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a> <a href="https://freiburg.social/tags/retronetworking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retronetworking</span></a> <a href="https://freiburg.social/tags/netro" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>netro</span></a> <a href="https://freiburg.social/tags/afp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>afp</span></a></p>
Ethan Blanton<p>A friend and I tried to get <a href="https://social.sdf.org/tags/NeitherNet" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NeitherNet</span></a> adapters working between an <a href="https://social.sdf.org/tags/AppleII" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AppleII</span></a> GS and a Mac LC III today, and failed. We were able to use a serial cable between the two without issue, however. I need to spend more time with the adapters to make sure they're both 100% correct, but quick ringing seemed OK. Any ideas from those who have used them what the trouble might have been?
