Can't help to wonder why does #Signal push their #smartphone version so hard? Smartphones are the least #secure #platforms for personal messaging, with a long and ugly track record of #privacy #violations, however it's very hard to register, install or use Signal without using a smartphone. Even if the #desktop #application is used, it requires constantly going back and forth to the smartphone version. That's weird for a privacy oriented service. Is there something fishy going on under the hood?

“Six years ago, #Melbourne-based film-maker #KristinaKraskov read an article about an international #MicrosoftExcel competition and had two thoughts. The first: “What the hell, that can’t be real.” The second: “There’s got to be a film about this – I want to watch it so badly.”

There wasn’t a film about competitive #spreadsheeting, so Kraskov decided to make it herself. The subject appealed to the director, whose work captures “different inner worlds that are a bit unusual on the outside”, including a short film titled Party in the Back, about a mullet festival.

#Spreadsheet Champions, which will screen at the Melbourne international film festival, follows six young competitors from around the world as they head to Florida for the 2023 #MicrosoftOffice Specialist world championship to showcase their skills. It might sound silly, but Excel is an incredibly sophisticated #application – according to the #documentary, the average person uses only 10-15% of its capabilities, but would-be competitors are required to understand closer to 70% of what it can do.”

I have decided that "carry-overable" and "carry-overability" are now valid #technological terms.
They describe how easy #knowledge from one #system or #application is applicable to another.
E.g. for Python, the carry-overability to Go is "minimal"
But for AWS, the carry-overability to Catalyst Cloud is "decent"

I always find it weird when people talk about #isolation when discussing #container and #application approaches.

Processes are generally "isolated" in virtual memory OSes.
That is what virtual memory is for.

APIs are a necessity for access to resources, such as files.
While full access by default is convenient for many things, it is clearly not secure by design; quite the opposite.

But policies are hard.
The culprit is that #security must not imply inconvenience.
Otherwise it becomes useless.
