A Severe Case of ‘Audience Capture’

Dr. Drew shaped America’s views on sex and addiction. Now he’s raising eyebrows

There’s now a term for content creators continuously giving their followers more of what they want, resulting in more follower engagement: audience capture.

“It’s the idea that influencers become radicalized by their audience,” says Jonathan E. Howard, MD, a New York City–based neurologist and psychologist: “They see what sort of thing earns them clicks, likes, reshares, and customers, and, consciously or not, they begin to produce more of it.”

apple.newsHe Was Once Known as America’s Most Trusted Physician. Now He’s Building a New Identity in the MAHA Era. — Men’s HealthFrom Loveline to Celebrity Rehab to the podcast circuit, Dr. Drew has shaped how we think about sex, addiction, and public health. His latest evolution says everything about the shifting world of physicians—and what that means for you. AT FIRST, THE interview looks like any you’d find on network TV: two men, both in sport coats, set off in boxes beside each other, speaking directly to the camera. The chyron beneath them has “Ask Dr. Drew” on the left and the name of his guest on the right:

Great to hear @adam and JCD desperately try to defend the Eric Adams DOJ deal. He was a very bad man till he joined #MAGA world. They try to turn it into a #FederalistSociety conspiracy centered on the admitted otherwise impeccable Sassoon and completely ignore that many other staff resigned as well. It allows them to completely ignore what this would mean about #Trump. Will we get an end of show mix where he sounds cool instead of totally corrupt? #AudienceCapture #ITM #TYFYC #TBPITU

«Such influencers typically don’t start out peddling rumours and disinformation. But some notice that, once they start talking about a certain controversial topic, they receive more engagement on social media. The more they talk about it, the more people ‘like’ and share what they have to say, leading algorithms to recommend their content even more.»
