94-year old celebrant sleeps 95% of the time in her mobility chair during a party with her church community

Today's my grandma's 94th birthday party, and our family spent the weekend preparing a celebratory meal for members of her church who are visiting.

While grammy's bedridden with significantly reduced consciousness, this gathering is a meaningful occasion for my parents, who host this event in her honour.

My sister and I helped with the preparations even if we aren't affiliated with this particular religious community anymore.

I find myself reflecting on the nature of such celebrations when the individual being honoured is no longer cognizant of the event.

As a lifelong learner of Psychology, I think about the various motivations and benefits these occasions hold for those involved.

Nonetheless, our family is united in marking this milestone so Happy Birthday, grandma!

During lunch, I mentioned to my family the birthday challenges I'd done over the years, and how I'd been unable to think of sixty-three things to do to mark my sixty-third. Suddenly I had it! 🎶 #birthdays #beatles #thebeatles

Sixty-Three Beatles Songs
Tall And True · Sixty-Three Beatles SongsI've set birthday challenges since swimming 55 laps for my 55th in 2017. So what 63 things could I do this year?

Thoughts on "special" occasions (#holidays, #birthdays, and such):

Another reason I don't celebrate is that there is a tendency to save things for "special" occasions and "special" days in humans. I think it would be better not to do this. Instead, live fully every day of your life. Don't delay and save and build up anticipation beyond what can be fulfilled. Don't let go to waste, or gather dust, things put aside. Experience, and fulfil, and treat others as if all days were birthdays or holidays. And none. Spread the joy out over all times instead of saving them to spike at one point then inevitably invert into disappointment and despair soon after or before. It takes not much to destroy great expectations, and equally little to lift those without.

This Sunday morning, we're remembering Lou Reed on his birthday.

Strawberry Switchblade covered Sunday Morning as a bonus track on the 12" single of Since Yesterday. It's one of the most beautiful things they ever recorded but it's never been reissued.
