Golumbia hits a grand fucking slam here: Mike Masnick and other self-absorbed, nominally “leftist” online activists loathe DRM, even tho 1) it’s the exact type of narrow technical fix (rather than a political or social one) that they champion in other contexts and 2) they love encryption of their own communications and files. In every forum, we repeatedly read the complaint that "copying isn't stealing because the original thing still remains." The implication is that if anyone has created a "copyable" product, they have no right to charge for it and must expect and tolerate that it will be widely copied without charge. One thing they hate with particular fury is digital rights management (DRM) technologies, technical means for ensuring that the only copies made are authorized by creators. In this one area, cyberlibertarians oppose a technical fix to a legal and social problem, which is interesting because they usually champion such solutions. As always, the dominant principle is me-first: I can protect my own machine by encrypting my communications, so nobody should stop me from doing it; but I can see that new game or music file and can't use it due to DRM, so DRM should be outlawed. (DRM creates an interesting conceptual conundrum for the vague first principle of freedom in Stallman's description of free software, since it's unclear why the use of such software would not be a freedom that developers should enjoy even though it ends up violating some of the other freedoms.)

Way too many liberals who should know better spend all day correctly railing against Big Tech as the destructors of democracy but then acting like repealing Section 230 (something that other countries do just fine without and which disproportionately benefits Meta and Alphabet in the US specifically) would be intolerable. Just finished Afterglow by Phil Stamper. It has the same huge problem as the first one: The voices of all the main characters are identical and you can’t tell them apart, despite the chapter headings. I enjoyed it, but I really wish there was more adult books for gay men, especially ones like these two books that deal with friendship and life and realistic queer relationships.
