Mr Salteena is not quite a gentlemanOK, that's the cider phase of the afternoon done.

I have pressed 23 or so kg of apples and crabs into 12l of juice. The yield is not so great cause you lose a bit once you discard the bad 'uns and cut out any obvious nasty bits, and the crabs also don't give as much juice as apples do.

With this I've put down two 5l carboys of juice for cider, and topped up the third with a kilo of honey and some water to make cyser.

Total labour input: about two hours to obtain the apples (foraging in the park, pick up from inlaws, harvesting our tree), and about 4 hours to process and press and clean up. Total dollar cost: zero. Satisfaction: immense.

I might have it in me to get one more batch done this year.

#cider

thezerobit
Home #cider making is humming along nicely. I've got 4 one-gallon jars that I brew in. The ingredients for a 1-gallon batch costs around $6, mostly for the apple juice as the sugar is very cheap and the yeast is just the dregs of the last batch after bottling. I've got about 2.6 gallons of cider on hand, now, and more fermenting.
Store bought hard cider is around $0.18 an ounce. My cider comes in around $0.06 an ounce for raw ingredients. Bottles will make great, cheap gifts.

Mr Salteena is not quite a gentlemanThese will be #cider in a few days (probably I'll have more to press by mid week too).
Mr Salteena is not quite a gentlemanSo in a minute, I'm getting another bucket of crabs from our tree, and I'll get the last of the in-laws' apples tomorrow, and will make more #cider later in the week.

This go around, we are checking out Transfusion.
With notes from the cidery, Transfusion is "...crafted with PNW Concord Grapes, Mexican Key Limes, and an invigorating kick of ginger."
And our thoughts? Well, for one, don't be like us and go sans-ice
Out of the can, Transfusion, as expected, pours with little or no carbonation. Under the light, Transfusion appears with a red-violet almost magenta color.
Swirling and sniffing, we recover notes of grape juice (which is why were suddenly craving Welch's), and some lime.
Sipping, we pick up much of the ginger, those concord grapes as if you were eating them fresh off the vine, and key lime juice.
Overall, Transfusion has a strong mouthfeel, a definite alcoholic warmth, and a dry finish punctuated by ginger.
#cider #craftcider #photography #oregon
thezerobit
I'm starting to reap the benefits of fermenting my own cider. Here is most of the first gallon batch racked into bottles. I used store bought apple juice, added sugar to raise the specific gravity to 1.088, pitched regular bread yeast, and fermented at room temperature for a few weeks, bringing the s.g. down to 1.000. That's around 12% alcohol. So this is like an apple wine, or very strong hard cider. It tastes amazing and is naturally effervescent.
#cider #HomeBrew

Mr Salteena is not quite a gentlemanMaking cider tomorrow. I have a mix of dessert and cooking apples from in-laws, but also several kilos of crab apples from our own tree and one in a park down the road to provide tannin and spice flavours. Looking forward to interesting results.

https://vital.org.nz/tags/cider.html

#cider
Trevor
Very sad to see this. 🥲 A drum of pear concentrate seen recently in Somerset England,(of all places) a traditional cider and perry county. This is manufactured from dessert pears in Türkiye by göknur, a very large industrial food product company. Do your research, read the label make sure your cider is local and wholesome. There are many cideries that are local and harvest driven giving you the authentic drink. #cider #perry #agroindustrial #notfromconcentrate
