TIL how to make a hurdle from coppiced hazel.

Two hurdles were made today and a couple others are off to a good start.

It’s tough work on the fingers twisting the hazel rods to enable them to bend around the end stakes where they act as stays.

I had an enjoyable and very satisfying time making this.

They will be used to make a barrier between the nature reserve and the allotment site next door. #Nature #Gardening #NewSkills #Allotment #Coppicing

@natureworks "a range of blended services (#agroforestry, education, #coppicing, tourism, burial ground, orchard etc) that support sustainable #livelihoods whilst simultaneously increasing #biodiversity."
Yum, yum. You're talking my language.
Got stuff you might want to have published in the US, Pc Design Mag, perhaps? Do you know Maddy Harland, editor at Pc Mag? She'd publish your stuff, too, if she hasn't already.
I like the range of subjects at buttondown.email/natureworks/a

Dear Friends of #Chalk #Streams, :hearthands:
Went for a walk along the Wandle, early morning.

These carp, one is part #koi, are nearly impossible to see. So I enhanced the image. Above the carp top right are tiddlers, small fish. The #Wandle is the fastest #flowing #river in #England. It was until fifty years ago a waste of suds, sewage and pollution. Before that, water mills powered the industrial revolution.

Now it is coming back to life. ✔️

Restocking, #hazel and other #trees being #planted on its banks. Excellent #coppicing. Thrush was #singing for a mate. #Parakeets are now common tree nesters. I always keep a look out for the #kingfishers.

@leahstokes I’m a sort-of-former political operative in South Carolina caring for 26 acres of rural land. We have a forest, a start up market farm & an experimental orchard.
A big part of my motivation: seeing which land-based Climate idea work in practice. We tinker with #biochar #no-till #coppicing etc.
Also interested in working out near-future food security.
I can help bridge the gap between the #Climate world and the political world.

Ginkgo biloba is reputedly better harvested when leaves are about to fall - maximising flavonoids. Looking for info on harvesting, I found this recent study on the effect of cutting back: Lu Z, Zhu L, Lu J, et al. (2022) Rejuvenation increases leaf biomass and flavonoid accumulation in Ginkgo biloba. Horticulture Research 9: uhab018, doi.org/10.1093/hr/uhab018. This would suggest that #coppicing #Ginkgo can increase the harvest of active constituents in the leaves.

spotted sommat rather sweet & thought i'd share.
my insta has been full of #mentalhealth & #somatics in recent years. it's been helpful, but now i'm regrowing, reentering the world with a new life direction.
i started following #woodcrafts people, beautiful #spooncarving & #coppicing folk. now my search page is *full* of suggested beautiful, inspirational woodcraft images, instead of reminders of how broken i have been/the world is.
it's a little thing, & such a healthy thing! 🧡

Maen hawdd i gweld coeden yn gael ei torri ac meddwl ei bod hi'n wedi gael ei lladd, ond yn miss tachwedd mae'r tymor copis yn dechrau, ac yn y flwyddyn nesaf bydd nin weld y coed yma tyfy nifer o drwnciau newydd yn y gwanwyn.

Its easy to see a tree being cut and to think its been killed but in november coppice season starts, and next spring we'll see these trees regrow multiple new trunks.
