I am so tired. My sleep is fucked for my course so I know I'll be tired AF, whatever times I sleep and wake, unless I get randomly lucky, which is possible.
It's annoying but otherwise fine. The DWP looms with their "make young people with symptoms work" bullshit, but the blade's not fallen yet.

With any luck, I can get work as an off-hours therapist. Like crisis lines, night shift standby, or similarly flaky clients who check my daily / weekly schedule forecast and call me up during my projected online-office hours.

@JessTheUnstill
honestly? I think I could do it. Only because being a therapist isn’t the same as being a social worker, friend, or coworker.

Depending on modality (especially Person-Centred / Humanistic), you can Socratic-Method someone in a guiding way, but you’re not reeeeally supposed to advise.
(I’m training, not qualified, mostly regurgitating this week’s topic notes.)

“Behavioural Experiments” in CBT is about (iirc, as NOT trained expert)
getting the person to first talk about the situation, then in any order:
notice their thoughts, feelings / emotions, bodily sensations, and behaviours.

I may vibe more with Psychodynamic (yes the freud one, no not the exact same, no not hypnotism, yes focused on how experiences inform inner monologue etc, I think).

.

I think Humanistic / Person-Centred is best suited for people who haven’t done much introspection yet, or haven’t felt empowered to fully explore their options.
(According to my class materials, this theory asserts that the client is the expert on their life and how to respond to situations.)

I think CBT is good for people who might know what they want but not how to get it, or need external structure, or have a discrete event or common situation they can’t resolve satisfiably.
(Class says both / all act as co-creators of meaning; I argue the counsellor is considered the expert, since they’re the one setting goals.)

.

I think (newer) Psychodynamics is better if you know what your daily challenges are, you’ve already depleted obvious responses and interventions, or you know you need dedicated time to unearth deep traumas or Complex PTSD.

For lurkers: c-PTSD doesn’t mean “interesting” or “harder”.
My definition is that the mistreatment
(anything beyond your ability to cope with what you had / knew at the time)
was repeated, often by a caregiver or someone with (real or perceived) authority, and with no reliable escape.

(InB4 someone says racism isn’t a mental illness, which is true!
But any definition of mental illness is socially or societal constructed and condoned.
Being gay was a mental illness within living memory.)

As long term people may know my day job is being a counsellor. I've recently received some wonderful testimonials so I've updated my website.

I do have to charge and I can only work with clients in the UK (although I'm in the process of working towards being able to work with clients in Ireland too!)

However word of mouth is very important so please pass my details on.

Thinking of ditching #google mail, drive and calendar for #protonmail. I'm a #counsellor so privacy is part of the deal. It's true people tend to want confidentiality from friends, family and the workplace, not the state or corporations when they come for #counselling. Am I about to pay a monthly fee for something I don't need? It would be peace of mind for me, I'm not comfortable with big tech surveillance, but it's not like people come to small time counselling with big time secrets.

Obviously, this isn't something I should do on a whim, and I should research it fully before doing it

But

I'm getting tempted to see if I can train as a counsellor

I've already got nearly 4 years of care work for men with mental health issues under my belt, and I've been volunteering for a local lgbt+ organisation for just over a year.

I also like the idea of being able to be self-employed, being able to set my own hours, and being able to work remotely

Of course, that would mean even more training on top of the 6 years I've already done, but I'm already struggling to find work, and this may help with that

#introduction
Hello again! I am a #not-so-tech-savy, #almostretired , #counsellor , who has been on another server since December after leaving wacky twitter-land.
Looking to connect with Canadians, prairie folk (Saskatchewan settler) and Saskatoon people. I love #nature, #photography, #gardening, #music, #traveling, #grandchildren #cdnpoli, #astronomy, #science, #books, #birds,#lakelife, #Grateful to be an #ally living on #Treaty6 and homeland of the Metis.
Appreciate any boosts as I restart!

Any ideological crank can (legally) call themselves a #psychologist or #counsellor in #Ireland, and many do. CORU will eventually regulate the title.

Until then, check for Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) or Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP) membership. Full membership, not student, registration. Both organisations have position statements condemning #ConversionTherapy

So time for a new #introduction then! (Leaving hashtags at the end as I hear it works better for accessiblilty)

I'm a person-centered that works in private practice.

My expertise is providing safe environments, understanding and identifying emotions, and working at relational depth. I work with many clients who have autism and ADHD as well as trans people.

I can only work with people in the UK and Europe for legal reasons.

#Introduction

I have been here for a couple of weeks now and finding my way around and want to say Hi!

I am re-training to be a #person-centred #counsellor #psychotherapist. I am on placement on the final year of my course. I know I will never be done with learning as I already have a list of extra training I want to do.

Looking to connect with others within #TherapistsConnect #TherapistsOfMastodon or wider world of #Mastodon to learn all I can & to support and share with each other. x

Met with a new therapist today (via zoom) fir an initial assessmentý. - one thing they don't you about in training is that once qualified its damn hard to find a local #counsellor that you don't have links to.

Anyway.....I mention my #spirituality & that I work with #Lilith. She then grabs an art print by her laptop of Lilith & gives a very brief overview of her experience of her. Identical to mine

Goes without saying that damn right I'm booked in to see her next week.
