Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>"Meta has recently started using the personal data of Europeans for AI training. Contrary to its GDPR obligations, Meta hasn’t asked for consent in advance. Instead, the company claims to have a ‘legitimate interest’ outweighing the fundamental right to privacy. A key argument in favour of such a ‘legitimate interest’ is the reasonable expectations of users. This begs the question: do people want this to happen? To find out more, noyb has commissioned the Gallup Institute to conduct a study among 1,000 Meta users in Germany. The results are clear: While almost 75% of users heard of Meta’s plans, only 7% actually want their data to be used for AI training. This also means that at least 68 million people never heard about the change."</p><p><a href="https://noyb.eu/en/noyb-survey-only-7-users-want-meta-use-their-personal-data-ai" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">noyb.eu/en/noyb-survey-only-7-</span><span class="invisible">users-want-meta-use-their-personal-data-ai</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/AI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AI</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/GenerativeAI" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GenerativeAI</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/EU" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>EU</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Germany" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Germany</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/GDPR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GDPR</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Meta" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Meta</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Facebook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Facebook</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/DataProtection" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DataProtection</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Surveillance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Surveillance</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/AITraining" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AITraining</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Privacy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Privacy</span></a></p>

Miguel Afonso Caetano<p>Social Media Apps: LoL! WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn - they're all in the same surveillance/data extracting business. At least, when you use their services through a web browser, you're in control. You can install PrivacyBadger and uBlock Origin. But with a smartphone app? You're being continuously exploited. </p><p>"Plaintiffs in a class-action case proved by a preponderance of evidence that Meta intentionally eavesdropped on and/or recorded conversations using an electronic device, said a verdict form released yesterday in US District Court for the Northern District of California. Plaintiffs also proved that they had a reasonable expectation of privacy and that Meta did not have consent from all parties to eavesdrop on and/or record the conversations, the jury found.</p><p>The lawsuit was filed in 2021 against Flo Health, maker of an app for tracking periods, ovulation, and pregnancy. Facebook owner Meta, Google, and app analytics company Flurry were added as defendants later. The plaintiffs settled with Flo Health, Google, and Flurry before the trial, leaving Meta as the only remaining defendant.</p><p>The plaintiffs' trial brief said that "Flo allowed Google and Meta to eavesdrop on users' private in-app communications" between November 2016 and February 2019. Flo app users had to complete an onboarding survey requiring them "to select a 'goal' indicating whether they are pregnant, want to be pregnant, or want to track their period, as well as input other information about their pregnancy or menstrual cycle," the brief said."</p><p><a href="https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2025/08/jury-finds-meta-broke-wiretap-law-by-collecting-data-from-period-tracker-app/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">arstechnica.com/tech-policy/20</span><span class="invisible">25/08/jury-finds-meta-broke-wiretap-law-by-collecting-data-from-period-tracker-app/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/SocialMedia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SocialMedia</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Flo" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Flo</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/DataProtection" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DataProtection</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Privacy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Privacy</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Meta" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Meta</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Facebook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Facebook</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Google" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Google</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/Surveillance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Surveillance</span></a> <a href="https://tldr.nettime.org/tags/DataExtraction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>DataExtraction</span></a></p>

Virginia Tech researchers Alan Michaels and Jared Byers spent five years finding out—and their discoveries should concern every citizen who values <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/privacy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>privacy</span></a>.</p><p>🎙️ In this pre-event coverage from Black Hat USA 2025, Sean Martin, CISSP and I explore groundbreaking research that exposes the hidden data economy behind political engagement. Using thousands of fake digital identities across 1,400 real campaigns, this study reveals how personal information flows through political networks—often without your knowledge or consent.</p><p>Key revelations include:<br>Cross-party data sharing that transcends political boundaries<br>AI-powered persona creation for targeted manipulation<br>Security vulnerabilities exposing citizen data<br>The real cost of political participation in the digital age</p><p>This isn't about politics—it's about the intersection of <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/technology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>technology</span></a>, <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/society" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>society</span></a>, and fundamental privacy rights. As our democratic processes become increasingly digitized, understanding these data practices becomes essential for every citizen.</p><p>The research maintains strict political neutrality, letting the data expose uncomfortable truths about how campaigns treat personal information regardless of party affiliation.</p><p>📺 Watch: <a href="https://lnkd.in/emYyif2D" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">lnkd.in/emYyif2D</span><span class="invisible"></span></a> 🎧 Listen: <a href="https://lnkd.in/efj8F5VE" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">lnkd.in/efj8F5VE</span><span class="invisible"></span></a> 🎪 Full Black Hat Coverage:<a href="https://lnkd.in/gQ4-g3Ab" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">lnkd.in/gQ4-g3Ab</span><span class="invisible"></span></a></p><p>What questions would you ask about political data practices?
