Finishing a final paper for my political economy class on the topics of #degrowth and #ecosocialism on Earth Day 2025. Just feels right.
Democratize the economy to save us and our planet!!
The family can stop being the space for the reproduction of domination, and stop being the only possible form of collective life. We can thus rethink the form of parenthood in a more collective way, politicize our personal decisions about motherhood and parenthood, reflect on how we consider childhood and the role of the elderly or disabled, the social relations we establish with them, and how we are able to break the logic of domination that we have internalized, inherited from previous societies.
Our desires and emotions are no longer things to be bought and sold, the range of choices is greatly enlarged for everyone, everyone can develop new ways of having sexual relationships, of living, working and raising children together, of building life projects in a free and diverse way, respecting each person’s personal decisions and humanity, with the idea that there is no one possible option, or one option better than the others.

Neoliberal capitalism suffocates the capacity to even imagine alternatives.
So when one that is both desirable and clearly articulated pops up, it is important to pay attention.
Library Socialism is a beautiful idea.
And we could just choose to do it. No magic tech, no hero needed to save us.
What if we ran the economy?

Hopefully, for the next round, people (those who count, the 99%) will understand the intrinsic futility of "green capitalism," and go for the jugular. It's ecosocialism (or whatever name you choose to call it) or barbarism (aka, extinction), baby!

Not much in the way of #degrowth-friendly #ecosocialism that I can see.
And they are still sharing via twitter and Facebook: choosing Barbarism despite everything?

Fight the Rich
Kshama Sawant
"I served as the only socialist on the Seattle City Council for ten years. In that decade, my council office led movements of working people to win historic victories, including the highest minimum wage in the country. I also saw firsthand how every part of the political establishment, led by big business and the Democratic Party, viciously opposed virtually every pro-worker piece of legislation we fought for. I saw how all the cogs of the capitalist machine — the establishment politicians, the courts, the police, the NGO leaders, and sadly many labor leaders — all work in concert together against the interests of workers.
I can tell you from my experience — and it is increasingly evident to working people — that this system is completely irredeemable, as are both U.S. political parties."
[Kshama Sawant is a revolutionary socialist, a founding member of Workers Strike Back, and a former Seattle City Councilmember who helped win the first $15/hour minimum wage in a major city and the Amazon Tax on wealthy corporations to fund affordable housing.]
[continued]
There are important differences between our epoch and that of the McCarthy period, but these can cut both ways. For one, the anticommunism of the 50s was actually made possible by white supremacy, the New Deal and the post-war boom. For another, despite the existence of the Soviet Union and a formally "bipolar" world, the U.S. was unquestionably the dominant military and economic power. We are in a period that starkly contrasts with the "American Century."
For one thing, we are in a state of economic decline and growing social polarization. For another, the Democratic Leadership Council put the nail in the coffin of Roosevelt's "liberal-labor alliance" in the late 80s, after a decade of bipartisan-supported "one-sided class warfare." The labor movement, has been further shredded by four more decades of the same and its own unwillingness and inability to undertake a frontal assault on racism and xenophobia.
MAGA demagogically claims that pandering to oppressive ideologies will restore economic ascendancy and wellbeing for the (white, male) masses. This is where any attempt to impose a witch-hunt cuts both ways. The economic leg is missing, a hegemonic bloc with labor as a junior partner is missing, leaving white supremacy. The ball is in our court.
Is this actually a surprise for anyone?
What this says is simply that if social movement forces can't get it together and profoundly coordinate in resistance on the ground, MAGA will leave us "shocked and awed" and take us down piecemeal. And unless those movements can organize and mobilize a pole of *independent*, political opposition, the MAGA regime will atomize, demoralize and sway a majority, who will go along with whatever measures MAGA pursues. All the legislative and legalistic dithering in the world won't stop them.
This is not simply my opinion, but history and lived experience. Among others, I'm just old enough to remember the last years of McCarthyite anti-Communism, although I was in diapers when the witch-hunts occurred. I had a cousin who was persecuted during the witch-hunts. Trump has all but announced his intention to engage in a new witch-hunt against "leftists."
