A meeting with a rich mark conman Ace Connors (John Hodiak) had arranged is crashed by grifter Ricki Woodner (Lucille Ball). She disrupts his land sale, and he later returns the favor by disrupting her art sale. You can feel the chemistry between the pair. That evening, Ace is approached by conman Fly Feletti (Elisha Cook Jr.), who, worried he couldn’t complete a big deal he had set up, sold it to Ace for ten thousand dollars. Ace managed to get ten times that from the mark, and Fly feels he deserves half; Ace disagrees.Ace did well in his time, with his biggest take being a half million dollars in bonds – in the initial scene, we saw where those bonds were hidden – but now, tired of running, Ace has made a deal with the insurance company and police. If he turns himself in, the case will be closed; he’ll serve five years in prison, and still have have the bonds afterward. Bob Simms (Lloyd Nolan) is the detective who’s been after Ace for years, and who will escort him cross-country by train from California to New York to turn himself in. Ace intends to enjoy himself, stopping at various places along the way, and invites Bob to enjoy himself as well, since he’ll be retiring when the trip is done.While Ace and Bob meet, Fly finds Ricki in the hotel bar, and tells her that she can twist Ace around her finger; if she can get the bonds out of him, they can split them. Ricki “unexpectedly” meets Ace and Bob on the train the next morning, and agrees to travel with them. Fly follows unseen to see that Ricki does as he wants.The <a class="hashtag" href="https://3v.is/tag/film" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#film</a> is about the train trip, with stops at a Spanish resort and Mardi Gras. Ace and Ricki grow closer, Bob tries to find the bonds, and Fly pressures Ricki to do the same. I found it a pleasant piece of <a class="hashtag" href="https://3v.is/tag/cinema" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#cinema</a>, with likeable characters, known quantities, and mild suspense. Ball was the only actor I knew by name, but I’ve seen Cook and Nolan in other things; I don’t think I’ve seen Hodiak in anything before. KentuckyConjurerI am a huge Elisha Cook, Jr fan (okay, the crush runs deep). Although he was generally portrayed as a nervous, uncoothe type of character, he was definitely a charmer in real life. There was some questions as to whether or not he ever had children. He said, no, but his army enlistment in 1942 reads "divorced, with dependents".
