When offering cordial salutations to one who has elected for "they/them" or other pronouns averant to either masculine or feminine presentation, clearly Sir or Ma'am is not correct. What is a valid stand-in for such honorifics? "Y'all" seems a bit comparably informal but it's all I can come up with off the cuff.

I grew up in an age when not to do the equivalent of following back would have been considered rude.
Besides, I'm judging these people (if they are people) on the basis of almost no evidence.
BTW, this seems to be much more of a problem on Bluesky than it does here. #security #etiquette #socialmedia

I'm getting more and more unsolicited/unconnected follows. Reasons I'm unlikely to follow you back:
* No profile content. (No avatar is fine by me.)
* No posts.
* No replies to other people's posts,
nor boosts/reposts of others' posts.

Any of those and my assessment is I either need more information, or it's another narcissist I don't need in my feed.

Just a quick reminder: I've had a couple of follows over the past few days, follows which have zero posts and no bios. If you lack a bio, and/or posts to get a feel for what you're about, I'll break the follow. Please take the time to establish an identity on this social network. Thanks.

A quotation from Judith Martin

Miss Manners is amazed at the number of otherwise gentle souls who turn nasty when they are driving. And they all suffer from the wonderful, ostrich-like delusion that they cannot be identified because they are safely inside their cars. It seems silly to her to have to say what good driving manners are. They are the same as the simplest, most obvious of non-driving manners, except that each person is surrounded by thousands of dollars of treacherous metal.

FFER !!--!! Friendly Fedi Etiquette Reminder

When you are self-replying (i.e. creating a long thread) it is courteous to set the visibility of all self-replies to "Quiet Public"

Otherwise you will fill the local and federated timelines with individual posts that appear in reverse order. They won't make sense to anyone, due to lack of context, and will usually be split up by other posts on the timeline anyway.

So add an indicator to the top-level post that you're creating a thread (like the 🧵 emoji or a [1/?] sequence counter) then kindly switch to "Quiet Public" visibility.

Thanks! :RemHug:

Adults are usually fairly tidy when dining out. But when kids and babies are along for the experience, a lot of the food meant for their tum tum ends up on the floor floor. So who’s supposed to clean up the mess? The server — who’s waiting on perhaps 20 other people — or the parents paying for the service? Luckily, @foodandwine sorts it all out for us:

Food & WineWho Is Responsible for Cleaning Up a Kid's Mess in a Restaurant, Waiters or Parents?Children can be messy eaters, but when a kid makes a mess in a restaurant, who should clean it up? A longtime waiter has answers for who should clean up food mess, a spilled drink, broken glass, or bodily fluids — the parent or the server.

As years go by I have less and less tolerance for two types of behaviors: Not responding (AKA saying no by saying nothing) and different sorts of indirect communications (not responding being pretty indirect in itself). The other reason I find myself a bit unhappy is I wonder if they think I'm a hostel service. I know norms, rules of hospitality and other weird courtesies are not a top priority in many activist milieus, but can we please raise the standard? Rant over. #Etiquette #Hospitality

🆕 post: Drawn Data Viz - chair sitting

Growing up when there was a lesson about etiquette, or proper manners, we were told how to sit on a chair. As an adult I like making charts and one of my hobbies is learning about historical fashion. How could that go wrong, right?

As someone pointed in the article, if it had been a man (her husband, what have you) doing the same yelling, all those "go girl" women would howling for his head. This is not being Latina. This is just bad behavior.

#Help! #Gender #LGBTQ+ #etiquette question in regards to #AltText descriptions for #images on #Mastodon & #Fedi.

Others must be having this same issue.

Example: #photo appears to be of a mother, father, and twin daughters attending an Orthodox Jewish service. But maybe we don't actually know?

What is the best-practice Alt-Text #usage? How do we describe this image if we don't know if the girls (?) are the children of the woman (?) & man (?) Can this be looked up? Thank you. @KronoMoon
