JaakkoIt always surprises me how much open water you can find, even in the middle of -30°C temperatures. Somehow, these small streams stay open for long periods, even in extreme cold. For us hikers, they always present a challenge, as crossing them over snow bridges or even ice is always an unknown danger.<br> <br> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/mountains?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#mountains</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/fjells?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#fjells</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/sonyalpha?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#sonyalpha</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/hiking?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#hiking</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/winterhike?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#winterhike</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/openwater?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#openwater</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/extremecold?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#extremecold</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/snowbridge?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#snowbridge</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/icesafety?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#icesafety</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/wilderness?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#wilderness</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/arcticadventure?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#arcticadventure</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/solohiking?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#solohiking</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/finland?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#finland</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/pöyrisjärvi?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#pöyrisjärvi</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.social/discover/tags/pulju?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#pulju</a>
JaakkoOn the border of Finland and Norway in the eastern Pöyrisjärvi Wilderness Area in February 2024, during a two-week solo winter hike. Michael Meckler<p>Our cold snap has passed, with coldest temperatures reaching -20C/-5F, and now high temperatures are expected to remain above freezing for at least the next two weeks. (Indeed, we are forecast to see 10C/50F on Friday.)</p><p>So the newspaper-and-black-plastic protective covering has come off the Japanese false holly (Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki'). The plants appear to have survived the cold, but time will tell. If there is damage, the leaves will turn yellow then brown, indicating the stem has died in that part of the plant. But I hope the plants suffer no ill effects at all from the extreme cold of early last week.</p><p><a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/garden" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>garden</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/Osmanthus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Osmanthus</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/OsmanthusGoshiki" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OsmanthusGoshiki</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/ExtremeCold" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ExtremeCold</span></a></p>

Sure the battery gets a nice smack on the bum, but honestly I was surprised it held its own against -20 C. </p><p>Though now strongly considering an EV charger at home.</p>
Michael Meckler<p>And so I have covered the Japanese false holly plants with crumpled newspaper and black plastic garbage bags, weighted down with stones, in the hope that keeping the plants covered and protected from any wind will allow the temperatures surrounding the plants to remain warm enough to prevent any damage.</p><p><a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/WinterWeather" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WinterWeather</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/ExtremeCold" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ExtremeCold</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/Osmanthus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Osmanthus</span></a></p>
Michael Meckler<p>From the experience of similarly cold temperatures around Christmas two years ago, I am fearful for my Japanese false holly (Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Goshiki'). Two years ago, much of its foliage and stems were killed by these temperatures. The plants have grown back, though with a lower habit than before.</p><p><a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/gardening" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gardening</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/WinterWeather" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WinterWeather</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/ExtremeCold" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ExtremeCold</span></a> <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/Osmanthus" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Osmanthus</span></a></p>

DoomsdaysCW<p>So yeah, things are changing rapidly in the <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/GulfOfMaine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GulfOfMaine</span></a>. After years of record <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/OceanWarming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OceanWarming</span></a>, now all of a sudden the deep waters have gotten VERY cold. Could it be melting <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/glacial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>glacial</span></a> waters? A change in the <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/AMOC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AMOC</span></a>? DoomsdaysCW<p>[Paywall -- full text in post] Scientists puzzled by colder deep water temperatures in <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/GulfOfMaine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>GulfOfMaine</span></a></p><p>by Nicole Ogrysko, Maine Public May 15, 2024</p><p>"About a dozen years ago, the Gulf of Maine experienced an <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/OceanHeatwave" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OceanHeatwave</span></a> unlike any other.</p><p>"Today, scientists are puzzling over new data that suggest the gulf may be experiencing another kind of<br>climate shock.</p><p>"Data collected from buoys placed in the Gulf of Maine show that over the last six months, deep water<br>temperatures are noticeably lower than the long-term average.</p><p>"'It’s not just cold in the deep waters right now, it’s really cold. And it’s fresher, it’s really fresher than it’s been,' said Nick Record, a senior scientist with Bigelow Laboratory. 'These are very unusual conditions, so I think there’s a lot that we can learn by watching how the year unfolds.'</p><p>"The Gulf of Maine is still one of the fastest warming oceans on the planet, Record said. The ocean <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/heatwave" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>heatwave</span></a> that hit the Gulf of Maine back in 2012 served as a prime example of the kind of surface temperature warming that much of the <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/AtlanticOcean" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AtlanticOcean</span></a> has been experiencing. </p><p>"But <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/ClimateChange" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ClimateChange</span></a> creates more unpredictable conditions, and Record said the Gulf of Maine may be experiencing another kind of <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/ClimateShock" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ClimateShock</span></a>, similar to a late season <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/frost" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>frost</span></a>.<br> <br>"'In some ways if we’re just expecting long term warming, we could be surprised when, even temporarily, we get these weird reversals to a cold situation. The more we can condition ourselves to think about surprises, what they might mean for us, the more we can be proactive and more be adaptive,' Record said.<br> <br>"It’s not clear how long this pattern will hold, Record said. Because colder water makes for prime feeding habitat for critically endangered North Atlantic <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/RightWhales" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RightWhales</span></a>, Record said he’ll watch for whether right whales return to the Gulf of Maine in larger numbers this summer than they have in recent years.</p><p>"Colder deep water may also change conditions for the <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/lobster" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>lobster</span></a> population. Deep water temperatures affect the timing of lobster molts, the presence of shell disease and other population impacts, Record said.'"</p><p><a href="https://www.bangordailynews.com/2024/05/15/state/state-environment/gulf-of-maine-cold-deep-water-climate-change/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">bangordailynews.com/2024/05/15</span><span class="invisible">/state/state-environment/gulf-of-maine-cold-deep-water-climate-change/</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/AMOC" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>AMOC</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/ClimateWeirding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ClimateWeirding</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/ExtremeCold" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ExtremeCold</span></a></p>
