Mx Amber Alex (she/it)
So uh. How do negotiations for a peace treaty or ceasefire work.

Usually in negotiations, i.e. about the price on eBay or trying to tickle a raise out of your boss, you demand more than you actually want so that the other party can "talk you down" to what you actually want, right?

Does that apply to peace talks too?

Assume Nation A and allies B, C, and D have been at war. A started it, but is at some point somewhat with their back to the wall, things are not looking good, but they still have enough bang left to take B, C, and D with them in case of defeat. Nukes or something, idk, enough for a scorched earth campaign that takes all four countries down.

Then A offers to negotiate for a ceasefire, and they really just want to freeze the status quo: no reparations, no return of conquered territory, etc. B–D of course, sensing that A is in a weak position (if they were winning, they wouldn't offer to negotiate), basically demand a surrender.

If A just makes their offer – a ceasefire and nothing else – there's no demands they can give up to appease the other parties. So what do they do? It's not like A, who started the war and is losing it, can demand reparations from B–D, even if A intends to give up that demand later so B–D can feel like they achieved something.

How does this work? Has any such situation ever happened in real history? I'm writing fiction rn and I'm stuck.

#AmWriting #AskFedi #History #Negotiations #FictionWriting

I went back to my flat, and realised that I actually missed living with other people, if only a little. There was still much to do because, of course, academically speaking, there was no final peer reviewed publication yet, and considering how momentous this work was, the reviewers were unprecedentedly critical. It took many rounds of reviews, edits and rebuttals to appease them.

Read Chapter 9. It was a slightly longer route, but I was now randomly picking either station and several routes to the department to make it harder to be followed. It was also a much nicer route, with more trees, so I didn’t really mind. The leaves on the lindens and horse chestnuts were just starting to turn. I savoured the feeling of autumn in the warming air and the slanting rays of the brightening sun.

At the same time, I was thinking over the state of the project. I was feeling very upbeat. Many good things had happened since the early spring, when we had decided to go into hiding.

Read Chapter 8. As I had expected, Li-Zhen had a rough time with the chemo but somehow, much to my surprise, she still managed to keep her research going. To what extent this was thanks to Mirza I never knew. I for my part shepherded the paper on the first phase of the research through the publication process, and so by early October, the official, peer-reviewed version was published in Nature Communications.

Although the scientific community had for the most part accepted our results based on the preprint, the publication did not go unnoticed. There was a lot of media interest and even mainstream politicians started to pay attention, as some reporters would quiz them about the contingency planning for the AMOC collapse. It was cold but clear and pleasant. I ambled without purpose, and ended up at the famous “God our father on the rainbow” fountain. There I stood for a while, staring blankly at the place where the sun had set, hours before — and thinking. I still couldn’t understand how it had all worked out in the end. It had been quite a rollercoaster ride.

Glasgow, March 2027

That illustrious first viral fundraising action was nearly three years ago. The media and the public had mostly forgotten about the project; but not entirely. Luzmila and Elías had managed to keep the network of supporters and organisations alive. My father was Indo, my mother Iban. For as long as I could remember, my parents had been set on moving to the Netherlands as soon as they could afford it, and they named me Sigrid, a name that was then common over there, so that I would fit in. I liked to think the choice was prophetic, and that I was destined to end up in Sweden because of my name. I know it wasn’t like that though: my mum told me much later that she’d named me after her favourite Dutch actress. We finally moved to the Netherlands when I was eleven; when I was seventeen we moved to Sweden and my father Swedified his name from Bloem to Blohm.

It was a move born from desperation: the Netherlands had turned out to be a very different place than my parents had imagined.

Read Chapter 5. She certainly hadn’t learned it from Eza, who didn’t enjoy preparing food and usually went for quick and easy meals. But Norman, Eza’s husband, simply loved cooking. I liked Norman a lot. He was a civil engineer specialising in urban regeneration projects in Malaysia and so he was still over there, planning to move when his major projects had finished. He was a Malay Chinese from Butterworth in Penang. They had met early in her PhD, when he was doing a postdoc at Strathclyde. They’d married soon after. I had gotten to know him quite well when I helped them looking after baby Nur. He was a rather atypical husband as he did his share and more of the housework and childcare; and he was a fantastic cook and a dedicated teacher. The views over the Clyde estuary are fabulous: the wide water, the rolling hills on the far side topped with wind turbines; the Dumbarton rock, the old dilapidated harbour at Bowling with the carcasses of old boats slowly degenerating. Even the Erskine bridge, that monument to car culture, is an impressive and arguably even elegant structure. The scenery and wildlife change every day with the tide, the weather and the seasons. On the return trip, the views towards Bute are amazing too. And in winter, the sunsets are often spectacular.

But that day, I had no eye for all that beauty. It was my habit to set a morning aside every week for reading papers, a very enjoyable activity: easy chair at the window, nice cup of coffee, looking out over the rain-swept Gareloch. That morning, I didn’t get very far. The Ditlevsen paper shook me. Not that it was a new notion, the possibility of collapse of the thermohaline circulation had been raised already in the late nineties. But the confidence levels on the estimates in this latest work were really high, and I trusted the authors. It was a wake-up call.

And yet, it would not be enough to move the world into action. Politicians were bound to assume the best possible case, which was 2095. The public would have forgotten the news tomorrow.

Read Chapter 2. Wim 🅾
Here is the first instalment, the scientific context. The first chapter will follow in a few days.

AMOC, short for the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, is the system of currents in the Atlantic Ocean. It is also known as the thermohaline circulation because it is driven by differences in temperature and salinity of the ocean waters. The Gulf Stream which keeps Northern Europe warm and cools the Eastern seaboard of Northern America is part of it.

With the pack ice melting due to global warming, the salinity of the Atlantic drops, and at some point AMOC will therefore collapse. This will lead to Siberian winters in Europe, and also increased aridity which will drastically reduce crop yields. Large parts of Northern Europe may become uninhabitable.

read in full: The Science

#writing #fictionwriting #fiction #story #climateFiction #climateChange
#RunningAMOC

Wim 🅾
My new positive climate fiction story is called "Running AMOC".

It's about the impending collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, AMOC for short, which keeps Northern Europe warm in winter and North-East America cool in summer.

This does not sound positive at all, but if we take action now, we could mitigate the worst effects. In my story, I imagined what it would take.

It tells about an international research project that managed to move public opinion and politicians into action. The protagonist is a female scientist of Indonesian descent. Most of the story is set in Scotland, in particular in Helensburgh.

I hope you will enjoy reading it.

#writing #fictionwriting #fiction #story #climateFiction #climateChange
#RunningAMOC
