Putting this out there to my friends on the fediverse- I am at a crossroads for video editing software. I’m past where iMovie does what I need. The question is do I make the huge leap to #davinciresolve or go with what is probably more similar and easy to use with #finalcutpro for my editing needs? Definitely not a professional so I don’t need professional color grading, literally just a couple of lots and some fiddling around with contrast and highlights works well for me. Any thoughts?

Bizarre bug(?) in FCP: dropping a clip into a project that is set to the same resolution and frame rate (1080p/23.98) and the same three frames out of every second are consistently dropped. Almost like one side of the app sees the metadata and plays it back, but the engine fails to render.

Solution? Add an effect, in this case a blur, but set the amount to zero. This forces FCP to re-render the clip, and eliminates the missed frames. WTF.

I'm not a filmmaker, but I've been using #Kdenlive to make some simple video edits, here and there ever since I moved to #Linux, and I far loved it over all other video editors I've used (for my use case) including #Adobe's #PremierePro, #Apple's #FinalCutPro, and #Sony's #VEGASPro.

I even edited all of our wedding videos - 1 for my side of the wedding, and another for the bride's side of the wedding using Kdenlive. Boggles my mind how this super easy to use yet so much more powerful video editor than I need it to be is
#FOSS. Definitely one of #KDE's best app yet, the only other KDE app that I think is on par in terms of quality and UI/UX is probably Dolphin (tho there are others that come quite close).

Continued thread

Speaking of #KDE apps, I've been using #Kdenlive for a year or two now as my primary video editor on my main PC (#Linux). I LOVE it and hugely prefer it over other video editors I've used and mained in the past including #Sony's #VegasPro, #Adobe's #PremierePro, and #Apple's #FinalCutPro (hmm KDE's Kdenlive Pro when).

I even used it months ago to edit 2 movies for my own wedding. Last Sat though, I needed to make a quick edit to a wedding video our wedding videographer had delivered because I needed to demonstrate a possible editing mistake they had made - I only had my
#MacBook on hand, and decided to use Kdenlive despite also having FCP.

I didn't expect it'd work well but IT DID - everything was smooth and renders were impressively fast eventho I was only using an M1 8GB
#Mac (and have a bunch of other things running in the bg). The only issue I found with it, and something I've discovered in other KDE apps on #macOS is that they kinda struggle or don't have the ability to open files with the (KDE) app, outside of the app.

For example, I can't open a
kdenlive file with Kdenlive - it'll launch the app, but not the file with it. I'd have to launch the app and navigate/open the file from inside the app manually. Same with some other KDE apps like Kate too - not being able to launch a text file with it, from outside. Otherwise though, I'm surprised but very pleased that Kdenlive is a viable option not just on Linux (and possibly #Windows) but macOS too.

Note: Donate to the project if you can! They certainly deserve and need all the funding and contributions they could get.

😭 Even after finding out I had the incorrect export settings and went from a 80GB to 10GB estimated export, Final Cut Pro still crashed on me and ran out of application memory over and over again.

I still had to slice up the project into 4, export 12min chunks, and then join them up again outside of that...

So, right now I am downloading DaVinci Resolve and we'll see how a new video edit goes over the weekend 🤞

A moment of intense panic came over me as I tried to export a video project and it kept failing, with Final Cut crashing out and a popup window showing it had ran out of application memory at over 100GB 😳

I think I've found a path to get this done though; I've split the project into 4 separate 12min chucks that I am exporting (with success!) and then I'll join them up with FFmpeg when I'm done 🤞 phew!

I need to ease up on the plugins/effects...
