The Poroharju esker in the Käsivarsi Wilderness Area, Finland. I captured this photo during my six-week solo winter hike. Esker is a large and extensive formation made of sand and rocks, and is quite common in Finnish landscapes. These eskers were formed during the Ice Age by melting water from glaciers.

Some pictures from Tarfala Valley in the Kebnekaise massif, north Sweden.

The trail to Tarfala is sort of a side trail off of the Kungsleden trail between NIkkaluokta and Abisko. In summer the first part of this trail is ridiculously green and lush. It follows a river with blue glacial water, so pure, you can just scoop it up and drink it. I find that a strangely satisfying action.
The world changes from colour to black & white once you near the upper part of the valley. Black rock, white ice, not one but two glaciers. Stong fallwinds coming down from the high mountains that guard the valley, making it hard to step forward at times. I cannot begin to describe how overwhelming it feels to just walk here, on your own little self, surrounded by this big Nature. A feeling to never forget, because it so much represents that fascination for the arctic that I"ve had since I can remember.

The red buildings in the first picture are from the research station of the University of Stockholm. They pop up kind of out of nowhere somewhere in the middle of the trail. A nice colourful intermezzo in gloomy world.

I tend to find less trash in Norwegian nature than in Finnish nature, but it can still be found there too. This pile was in the ruins of a building near an open wilderness hut called Oksvannskoia. There was so much of it that I had to leave it behind, as I couldn’t carry all that extra stuff with me—and there was no trash bin at the hut. Needless to say, people should carry their own crap out, and this just makes me so angry.

Picking some blueberries. On long hikes, it’s always nice to have something fresh and natural instead of dried foods, chocolate, candy, or nuts. In Finland, you can go into any forest or fjell area, private or not, and pick as much as you like. However, on private land, the owner might not be too happy if you clear out their secret spots! 😅

In a tent during a winter storm on our hike to the Sør-Varanger area in Norway. We were on top of a fjell when the storm arrived. Visibility dropped to zero, and our ascent was one of the most difficult I’ve ever done. Once we reached a lower and seemingly flat point, we decided to set up camp and wait out the storm.

Raging madman – I found this camping stove gas canister on the shore of a pristine small lake in the Kaldoaivi wilderness area during my two-month-long hike. It had been there for a while, as it was all rusty and beaten by the weather. Needless to say, it is no longer there. Some of the trash that I collected during this hike I posted back home, and my plan is to have an exhibition of them and the photos I took on this hike.

#Jotunheimen #fjelltur #fjell #StoreKnutsholstinden
