cagibidev<p>Yesterday I started using <a href="https://mastodon.gamedev.place/tags/gemtext" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gemtext</span></a> for local documentation, which is the simplest format with hyperlinks I could find. Markdown is a feature-fest in comparison.<br>For html conversion I think I'm going to put everything in a pre tag and just convert the links.<br>Speaking of, what do you think about the link line constraint (no inline links)? It feels like my documents are a bit tidier and I started using it for regular web pages.</p>

pandorastalewiki<p>The very first content article of Pandora's Tale Wiki was the list of characters. It actually predates the wiki: the character table started as a spreadsheet when I was preparting for the first <a href="https://pandorastale.wiki/wiki/Pandora%27s_Tale_Wiki:Pandora%27s_Tale_Volume_1_Character_Tournament" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Pandora's Tale Character Tournament.</a><span><br><br>When I created the Fandom version of PTW, one of the first things I did was convert the table into </span><a href="https://pandorastale.wiki/wiki/Characters" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">a MediaWiki article.</a><span><br><br>That article uses MediaWiki-specific features. Namely, it uses </span><a href="https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Magic_words#Statistics" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">PAGESINCATEGORY</a><span> to display the number of chapters each character appears in.<br><br>Today, I have finished converting the character appearances table to gemtext. I had it in Markdown, but I realized I wasn't even using any markdown-specific features. Gemtext (and Forgejo's Markdown) lack tables, so I used plain text tables. (That's the format that </span><a href="https://labyrinth.zone/users/yassie_j" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@yassie_j@labyrinth.zone</a> used to hate until <a href="https://transfem.social/notes/a6xz7yr1ew7b7t3h" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">I single-handedly won them over.</a><span>) <br><br>I also have a Python script for updating the number of character appearances automatically.<br><br></span><a href="https://git.average.name/1something/PTW/src/branch/trunk/Main/Characters.gmi" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://git.average.name/1something/PTW/src/branch/trunk/Main/Characters.gmi</a><span><br><br>There's a long way to go to finish converting the wiki, but I'm hopeful I will be able to do it.<br><br></span><a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/PandorasTaleWiki" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#PandorasTaleWiki</a> <a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/PandorasTale" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#PandorasTale</a> <a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/PandorasTaleCharacterTournament" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#PandorasTaleCharacterTournament</a> <a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/Gemtext" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Gemtext</a></p>

pandorastalewiki<p><span>Today, I am announcing plans for the biggest change to Pandora's Tale Wiki since its founding: I am going to port the wiki away from MediaWiki and convert it to a git repository of text files. This conversion process may not be easy, but it is necessary. If we continue down the current path, I am going to burn out and will not be able to continue maintaining the wiki. I have described the reasons for the change in the article for Project: Texts About Pandora<br></span><a href="https://pandorastale.wiki/wiki/Pandora%27s_Tale_Wiki:Texts_About_Pandora#Hosting_availability" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://pandorastale.wiki/wiki/Pandora%27s_Tale_Wiki:Texts_About_Pandora#Hosting_availability</a><span><br><br>(Yes, the name of the article is a pun on the pages "Texts from Pandora" and "Texts from Pandora 2".)<br></span><a href="https://comicsbyxan.com/comic/texts-from-pandora/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://comicsbyxan.com/comic/texts-from-pandora/</a><span><br></span><a href="https://comicsbyxan.com/comic/texts-from-pandora-2/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://comicsbyxan.com/comic/texts-from-pandora-2/</a><span><br><br>There are still some things I need to determine. <br><br>1) First and most significantly, I have to figure out how to convert a MediaWiki instance into a git repository. I've found several scripts which claim to do it, but they all seem to have significant drawbacks in addition to being unmaintained. I would </span><b>greatly appreciate</b><span> advice from computer creatures in this regard.<br><br>2) Then I have to decide on the text format: Plaintext, gemtext, or markdown? There are ups and downs to each of them, though I'm not as worried since I believe it might be possible to convert between them later. <br><br>3) Finally I have to decide on the hosting software and platform if I want anyone else to be able to read it. Gitlab, Forgejo, sourcehut, or something else?<br><br>Once I answer these questions, I am going to move Pandora's Tale Wiki to a git repository, and then I will ask Miraheze to shut down their copy of the wiki. I don't know how long this process will take, but I believe it's the only way I can continue the wiki.<br><br><br></span><a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/PandorasTale" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#PandorasTale</a> <a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/PandorasTaleWiki" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#PandorasTaleWiki</a> <a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/ComicsByXan" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#ComicsByXan</a> <a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/Webcomics" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Webcomics</a> <a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/Homestuck" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Homestuck</a> <a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/MSPaintAdventures" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#MSPaintAdventures</a> <a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/Miraheze" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Miraheze</a> <a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/Wiki" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Wiki</a> <a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/Wikis" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Wikis</a> <a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/WebcomicWiki" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#WebcomicWiki</a> <a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/MediaWiki" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#MediaWiki</a> <a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/Git" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Git</a> <a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/PlainText" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#PlainText</a> <a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/GemText" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#GemText</a> <a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/GeminiProtocol" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#GeminiProtocol</a> <a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/Markdown" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Markdown</a> <a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/MD" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#MD</a> <a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/SourceHut" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#SourceHut</a> <a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/srht" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#srht</a> <a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/Forgejo" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Forgejo</a> <a href="https://transgirl.cafe/tags/Gitlab" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Gitlab</a></p>

But then 80-char-wide lines are too wide for mobile.</p><p><a href="https://floss.social/tags/GeminiProtocol" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GeminiProtocol</span></a> <a href="https://floss.social/tags/NotGoogleGemini" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NotGoogleGemini</span></a></p>
183231bcb<p><span>I've a question about accessibility and the Gemini protocol! <br><br><br>For close to a decade I've kept track of some information on my computer using "plain-text tables." Instead of using a program like a spreadsheet to organize information in a table, I'll create a plain text file. I abuse the fact that my text editor has a monospace font to make a table completely out of ASCII characters. Here's an example:<br></span></p><pre><code>Header 1...Header 2....Header 3 Info 1.....Other info..Something else Info 2.....Stuff.......Something</code></pre><span><br>I recently became aware of the </span><a href="https://geminiprotocol.net/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Gemini Protocol.</a><span> . GemText doesn't have a native "table" tag, but it does have pre-formatted text. I was pretty happy to realize that the easiest way to present information as a table in geminispace is the same way I've been writing and storing tables for years before gemini existed!<br><br>But I want to know whether this is accessible to folks who use screenreaders. <br><br>A document that never leaves my computer and is only ever seen by me doesn't need to be accessible to blind folks, because I'm not blind. But if I'm going to put something on the internet for anyone to read, then it needs to be screen-reader friendly.<br><br>If you have a screenreader, can you understand the example table above? Is there a better way to communicate the information of a table using only plain text?<br><br></span><a href="https://transfem.social/tags/ScreenReader" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#ScreenReader</a> <a href="https://transfem.social/tags/Accessibility" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Accessibility</a> <a href="https://transfem.social/tags/Gemini" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#Gemini</a> <a href="https://transfem.social/tags/GeminiProtocol" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#GeminiProtocol</a> <a href="https://transfem.social/tags/GeminiSpace" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#GeminiSpace</a> <a href="https://transfem.social/tags/ProjectGemini" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#ProjectGemini</a> <a href="https://transfem.social/tags/GemText" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#GemText</a><p></p>
