What are embeddings?

Embeddings are numerical representations of things like words, sentences, images – or even customer profiles. They help models understand meaning and similarity between those objects.

Example:
The word "king" might be turned into a vector like [0.8, 0.1, …],
while "queen" becomes [0.81, 0.12, …]
→ Because these vectors are close, the words are semantically similar.

Embeddings are the backbone of:
Similarity searches
Recommendation engines
Semantic search
or RAGs (Retrieval-Augmented Generation)

And where are all these vectors stored? In vector databases, which let you search through embeddings lightning-fast.

This was the focus of Day 2 of the 5-Day Kaggle Generative AI Challenge: Embeddings & Vector Stores.

"AI firms are interested in developing tools and marketing strategies that revolve around the allure of AGI—around a stillborn god that will transform large swaths of society into excessively profitable enterprises and incredibly efficient operations. The ascendance of fascism comes with the purge—the attempt to rollback institutions and victories seen as shackles on the ability of capitalism to deliver prosperity (and limiters on the inordinate power and privilege for an unimaginably pampered and cloistered elite).

Both are part and parcel to what’s going on, but one project is objectively more dangerous (and ambitious) than the other. In that way, then, all of this is a distraction."

"In a new joint study, researchers with OpenAI and the MIT Media Lab found that this small subset of ChatGPT users engaged in more "problematic use," defined in the paper as "indicators of addiction... including preoccupation, withdrawal symptoms, loss of control, and mood modification."

To get there, the MIT and OpenAI team surveyed thousands of ChatGPT users to glean not only how they felt about the chatbot, but also to study what kinds of "affective cues," which was defined in a joint summary of the research as "aspects of interactions that indicate empathy, affection, or support," they used when chatting with it.

Though the vast majority of people surveyed didn't engage emotionally with ChatGPT, those who used the chatbot for longer periods of time seemed to start considering it to be a "friend." The survey participants who chatted with ChatGPT the longest tended to be lonelier and get more stressed out over subtle changes in the model's behavior, too."
