Hip update…

...kind of... 😇 I start writing this post 5 days before the scheduled call from the surgeon. I got the puncture done 8 days ago. And the surgeon will call me in 5 days (as I write this). Unfortunately... It's a 15:00 call, so I'll have the whole day to be anxious about it. As I'm already anxious about it now. I mean, I know I need a surgery. I know that hip bowl (or is it a cup?) needs to be placed in the right position again. So my leg can stop "wobbling", so it can stop tingling, […]

Neue Serienkritik:

Even now, Thrust as a dependency is one of the main reason why we have a #CUDA backend, a #HIP / #ROCm backend and a pure #CPU backend in #GPUSPH, but not a #SYCL or #OneAPI backend (which would allow us to extend hardware support to #Intel GPUs). <doi.org/10.1002/cpe.8313>

This is also one of the reason why we implemented our own #BLAS routines when we introduced the semi-implicit integrator. A side-effect of this choice is that it allowed us to develop the improved #BiCGSTAB that I've had the opportunity to mention before <doi.org/10.1016/j.jcp.2022.111>. Sometimes I do wonder if it would be appropriate to “excorporate” it into its own library for general use, since it's something that would benefit others. OTOH, this one was developed specifically for GPUSPH and it's tightly integrated with the rest of it (including its support for multi-GPU), and refactoring to turn it into a library like cuBLAS is

a. too much effort
b. probably not worth it.

Again, following @eniko's original thread, it's really not that hard to roll your own, and probably less time consuming than trying to wrangle your way through an API that may or may not fit your needs.

Preparing for disruption…

When I got my hip revision about 3,5 years ago, I was hoping it would last me at least 10-15 years. So when I recently got a CT scan, and the surgeon saw the results... I got a diagnosis that didn't excite me one bit... I mean, it was good to know that my pains and discomforts had a valid reason, that it wasn't "just me" and all that... I never thought that I would need to get my hip socket/bowl/cup (or whatever it is they wanna call it) reattached because it was letting loose... 😔 I need to have my hip area tested for infections, as I had several after the surgery. I had three months of loads of heavy antibiotics to deal with, on top of the recovery of the surgery itself. And seeing that an infection can be a cause of the socket coming loose, the doc needs to be sure that the area is clean. If and when the area is clean, then the surgery will be scheduled. I have no idea how long this will all take, but... People knowing me also know that in my brain, I am already trying to plan everything that I need to arrange and do when that surgery comes. […]

Continued thread

“AHS pays $4,833 for a #shoulder replacement, while private facilities under ASI were negotiating rates as high as $11,243,” the union representing paramedics and other health care professionals said, citing the Globe report. “Similar overcharges exist for #hip and #knee #replacements, with #private #health #providers consistently charging over twice what it costs #AHS to perform the same procedures.”

That damned leg…

My right leg and me go back a long way, 😉. But since I was 16, due to an incompetent school medic, things got worse faster than they would have otherwise. Sure, the leg was bad, it would have given me issues in the end. But the way it happened now, it was probably way worse than if it had happened over time... The way it happened still angers me. It hurt so much and it made the bad situation even worse. Of course I can never be sure, as this happened and I will never know what would have happened if nature had done it's thing by just time... But yeah... I'll try to give a short explanation of what happened in the last 28 years up to now, but I fear the definition of short may still seem long to you. Sorry in advance! […]
