MV Louise Michel<p>The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948 represented a milestone in the recognition of the universal rights of every human being following the unprecedented horrors and mass expulsion of World War II. The Declaration declares that all rights and freedoms it sets out are universal, and without exclusion due to race or ethnicity, religion, gender identity, language, political or other opinion, nationality, social origin, property, birth, or any other status.</p><p>Today, 192 member states of the United Nations have committed themselves to this declaration. And yet, governments and international organisations have continually undermined and neglected the obligation to protect refugees.</p><p>Across the world, people are forced to leave their homes; fleeing conflict, persecution, climate change, or a lack of basic care. The argument is that the shipwreck happened outside of <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Greek" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Greek</span></a> jurisdiction. From the beginning, the Hellenic Coastguard and <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Frontex" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Frontex</span></a> should have been the ones sitting on the court bench and held responsible for one of the deadliest shipwrecks in the last decade! MV Louise Michel<p>500 dead and missing children<br>In the last 10 years, at least 500 children have died crossing the Central Mediterranean Sea. Each of these losses is one too many.</p><p>According to records from the International Organization for Migration, 16695 people have died or gone missing while fleeing across the central Mediterranean since 2014. At least 500 of these were children. The true number is higher due to unreported shipwrecks. </p><p>The legitimate desire for a safe life is so high that people on the move have to choose the dangerous route across the <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/mediterranean" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mediterranean</span></a> again and again. MV Louise Michel<p>Kidnappings following interceptions by the Tunisian Coastguard. </p><p>There are reports about kidnapping by criminal gangs at the Tunisian ports following interceptions by the Tunisian Garde National (TGN).</p><p>Yesterday, we spoke about how invisible shipwrecks are on the rise, caused by poor-quality iron boats departing from Tunisia. Those who survive and are intercepted by the TGN are expulsed to desert areas on the Libyan and Algerian border. However, sometimes, when transfer buses aren't available, they are left at <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Sfax" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Sfax</span></a> port by the TGN. There are increasing reports from local media and testimonials from survivors, of kidnappings of people on the move by criminal gangs, with ransoms being demanded for their release.</p><p>Whilst <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Italy" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Italy</span></a> strengthens their cooperation with Tunisia, we see just how unsafe a place it is for people on the move. MV Louise Michel<p>The EU’s partner in crime! <br>Once again, we see the EU-funded so-called Libyan coastguard (scLCG) carrying out extreme acts of violence during a rescue operation in international waters, which has now resulted in the wrongful detention of a rescue ship. The scLCG are well documented for carrying out extremely dangerous manoeuvres, resulting in the capsizing boats in distress, however, now a more regular occurrence is the firing of live bullets.</p><p>Just days ago, the scLCG was caught on camera firing at @RescueMed 's RHIB whilst carrying out a rescue of 58 people, risking the lives of all those onboard. Even though the dangerous criminal actions of the scLCG resulted in mass panic and people jumping into the water, Mare Jonio has now been detained for 20 days by Italy, accused of encouraging "migrants to jump into the sea" to hinder the scLCG operation. Shouldn't it be the ones carrying out the unlawful vicious attack being charged?</p><p>Last month we also saw footage of the scLCG firing shots during a rescue being carried out by @soshumanity_en. Humanity 1 was also detained following the false report from scLCG, this was later dropped, but only after the civil court in Crotone called it an "injustice of the measure issued".</p><p>Louise Michel stands in solidarity with the 58 survivors rescued by <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/MareJonio" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MareJonio</span></a>. We call on the EU to investigate this crime and to stop the funding of the violent scLCG. MV Louise Michel<p>Another deadly quarter in the Central Mediterranean<br>In the last 3 months, over 383 people have died or gone missing whilst making the deadly journey across the central Mediterranean Sea trying to seek safety in Europe (Source: UNHCR). Many more lives have been lost in undocumented invisible shipwrecks.</p><p>Whilst Europe continues to strengthen its external borders, the EU-supported so-called Libyan Coast Guard (SCLCG) illegally pushed back over 2,738 people to Libya (Source: IOM), an unsafe country as deemed by the Italian high court and many human rights organisations. The EU is sending people to their deaths with their racist policies and the funding of the SCLCG.</p><p>Europe's deadly policies need to change. Louise Michel demands freedom of movement and safe passage for all. MV Louise Michel<p>Justice for the 15 people killed in front of Ceuta 10 years ago!</p><p>10 years ago today, around 400 people on the move (POM) attempted to cross the border between Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. To prevent them from entering Spanish soil, the Spanish Guardia Civil fired rubber bullets and tear gas towards these people as they struggled to stay afloat in the water. </p><p>At least 15 people lost their lives, and many more were seriously injured in this violent pushback and violation of their basic human rights. Yet ten years on, the victims and their families continue to seek justice. </p><p>Louise Michel calls for those involved to be held accountable.
