The #US govt has regularly dispatched hundreds of monitors to voting locations…, aiming to protect ballot access, discourage improper #partisan #influence & act as a moderating force on political campaigns.

While the #DOJ has the #legal right to request access to polling sites, inflamed partisanship & ideological #extremism has contributed to greater resistance to such activities in some #GOP-controlled states….

Although #Trump’s attacks on the #press are not new, they have escalated in recent weeks. Trump has said that #CBS should lose its broadcast license over a 60 Minutes interview w/VP #KamalaHarris, his Democratic opponent. He has pressured #FoxNews to stop airing ads that are critical of him. He has threatened #Google for showing negative stories about him. He has previously vowed to #jail #reporters.

He’s also employed this kind of attempted bullying before. 4 years ago, #Trump denied Goldberg’s story about “#SuckersAndLosers,” but other reporters quickly duplicated the reporting, including Jennifer Griffin of #FoxNews. Trump quickly (though unsuccessfully) demanded that Fox fire her. Trump has also sporadically railed at Goldberg & #TheAtlantic since 2020.

The political philosophers of the early republic, the authors of the #Constitution, & the #law-school professors of the present day have all mostly assumed that federal judges will strive, in the words of Alexander #Hamilton, to “unite the requisite integrity with the requisite knowledge.”

But in practice, they are also constrained by norms & conventions. Since the early 20th century, for instance, #Congress has not dissolved #FederalCourts whose #judges displease it—which did happen in the more distant past. The idea of #CourtPacking has been considered out of bounds ever since #FDR tried & failed to reshape #SCOTUS in the 1930s by proposing to appoint up to 6 additional justices.

That instinct stayed w/them. In #1776, the #DeclarationOfIndependence accused the #king of having “made #Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, & the amount & payment of their #salaries.” A decade later, delegates to the Constitutional Convention of 1787, although bitterly #divided about many things, stayed #unified on the need for #independent federal judges.
